Ducati has announced that it will produce a limited number of a very special Panigale, the 1199 Superleggera. Using materials such as titanium, magnesium and carbon-fiber, the Ducati 1199 Superleggera has a claimed dry weight of 341.7 pounds (155 kg) and produces over 200 horsepower. The creation of the Superleggera starts with a Ducati 1199 Panigale R. The standard aluminum monocoque front subframe is replaced with a magnesium version, the wheels are replaced with forged magnesium units and the rear subframe is now carbon-fiber, like the new bodywork. A lightweight lithium-ion battery is used, and the exhaust system includes titanium sections. Titanium is also used to make many of the bolts and fasteners and the rear shock spring. Öhlins supplies the lightweight FL916 forks with fully-machined fork bottoms and the TTX36 rear shock. Weight savings are even carried over to the drive chain, a Superbike-spec 520-series chain, which works with a lightweight Ergal rear sprocket. The engine is upgraded with titanium exhaust valves, short-skirt, two-ring pistons (a first for any Ducati streetbike), combustion chamber modifications that match the pistons and raise compression ratio and a lightened crankshaft. The electronics of the Superleggera have been upgraded to match the engine modifications, including the addition of Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) and the system’s ability to automatically calibrate for different rear tire sizes and final gearing ratios. The Superleggera will also be supplied with a track-only “Race Kit” that raises horsepower by five and reduces weight by another 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg) via the installation of a titanium Akrapovic race exhaust system. The Race Kit also includes a taller windscreen, a dust cover, front and rear paddock stands, mirror block-off plates, and removal kits for the license plate holder and side stand. Only 500 Ducati 1199 Superleggeras will be produced, with owners of Desmosedici RR and R-model Superbike to be given the first right of refusal to purchase one. According to Ducati, 75% of the total allotment have already been sold.
