AMA Pro Daytona SportBike racer Elena Myers underwent a successful operation this morning to remove surgical hardware used to repair a broken right collarbone she suffered in a crash earlier this season at Barber Motorsports Park. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Maury K. Harwood performed the nearly-hour-long procedure to remove the plate and four of five screws at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Gatos, California. “I went to see Dr. Harwood last Wednesday [September 25], and he said he likes to take hardware out as soon as possible, especially with racers,” Myers told Roadracingworld.com Tuesday. “I figured the sooner I get it done the better so I can start training for the off-season. I should be able to start training again in a week or so.” Myers said she plans to recuperate at her family’s home in Discovery Bay, California, before returning to her full-time home near Birmingham in the coming weeks.
