Dunlop, the control tire supplier of AMA Pro Road Racing, pulled a new tire from its allocation sheet for the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro National Guard Superbike class after signs of a potential problem arose during Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “We tested a new spec of tire at Road America,” Sabastian Mincone, Dunlop Senior Road Race Manager, told Roadracingworld.com Friday. “Everyone liked it, so we made some and brought them here for this weekend. But it’s not 100% ready yet. Out of 60 tires used today, we saw excessive wear with two of them. With the Championship on the line this weekend, we didn’t want to take a chance on having a problem. So we’re removing it from the allocation.” The tire in question is the KR451 rear slick in the 2662 compound. Superbike riders still have a choice between a KR449 rear slick in a harder 7455 compound and a KR449 rear slick in the 2662 compound, the tire that Josh Hayes used to win the AMA Pro Superbike race at Laguna Seca in July. All of the tires are made in the U.S. Mincone said Dunlop was contacted all of the Superbike riders at Laguna Seca directly to inform them of this development. UPDATE: It was just announced that AMA Pro Superbike racers will be allowed to continue using the KR451-2662 rear tire in practice and qualifying at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, but they will not be allowed to race on it.
