Maxwell takes the championship lead after Sydney Motorsport Park clean sweep Team Suzuki rider Wayne Maxwell has taken the QBE Australian Superbike Championship lead after winning both races at Sydney Motorsport Park today, Maxwell led home his teammate Robbie Bugden to give Suzuki 1-2 in both races and overall. Team Honda Racing’s Jamie Stauffer scored his first podium of the year finishing fourth and third respectively. Maxwell now sits nine points ahead of Glenn Allerton in the championship standings with Bugden two points behind in third. “I am stoked to win the overall today,” Maxwell said. “Full credit to the GSXR and the Dunlop tyres. “The team has worked incredibly hard and to finish 1-2 is a fitting reward for them. “This is the first time we have really been able to put Glenn (Allerton) under pressure it will be interesting to see how he bounces back tomorrow,” Maxwell continued. Robbie Bugden, who will start from pole position for tomorrow’s Round 5 races at Sydney Motorsport Park, said it was important to capitalise on his qualifying position. “Overall it was a very positive day,” Bugden said. “ For Wayne and I to finish 1-2 in both races is a credit to the whole Suzuki team. “I am just two points behind Glenn in the championship so tomorrows races are really important. I need to make the most of my start position.” It was a tough day for NextGen Motorsports rider Glenn Allerton who crashed at Turn 8 in the final race. Allerton had pole position for today’s races that he finished third and 13th to end the round eighth. Aaron Morris took the round spoils in the Motul Supersport class ahead of Race 1 winner Daniel Falzon and pole sitter Callum Spriggs. Morris won the final race of the day and was elevated to third in Race 1 following a post race penalty to Ryan Taylor. “I was third in the first race so to win the final race was a great finish to the round,” Morris said “This weekend is going really well. The bike is great, I don’t think we will make too many changes I just hope we can back it up tomorrow. “I took some great points from today and I have moved to second in the championship,” he added. Taking 42 points from today’s round, Championship leader Daniel Falzon has extended his lead to sit 22 points ahead of Morris who is now second in the Motul Supersport standings. “It was a really good round for me,” Falzon explained. “We didn’t come here with high expectations. “I was still a little disappointed with fourth in the final race, the track temperature was so high and I think some of the other competitors made better tyre choices. “Tomorrow I am starting from pole and I hope I can keep it out in front and build on my championship lead. Matt Walters continued to dominate the Prostock Championship; the NSW rider took a clean sweep of the round, starting from pole position and winning all three races. Kyle BUCKLEY (QLD) 59 More, from a press release issued by Team Honda Racing: Team Honda Racing Round 4 Race Report 3rd August 2013 – Team Honda Racing finish Round 4 of the Australian Superbike double-header at Sydney Motorsport Park today in 3rd and 4th place overall for the round and are eager to get back out on track for tomorrow’s Round 5 races. Jamie Stauffer started today’s races on the front row in P4 on the grid with team mate Josh Hook in P5. The results in Race 1 were not what the Honda team were looking for with Stauffer finishing 4th and Hook finishing 5th. It became clear to the team after Race 1 that they needed to make a significant shift in the setup of the bikes before the second race and the technicians worked quickly to set-up the Honda CBR1000RRs accordingly. Race 2 today saw a strong improvement in lap times and consistency for both riders and Stauffer finished on the podium in 3rd place with Hook not far behind in 4th place. Stauffer: “Today wasn’t too bad. I struggled a little with the other guys pulling away from me in race 1 as the set-up wasn’t quite there. We made a big change for the second race and it was a lot better. We had a more consistent bike throughout the race and were then back up with the front guys. We ended up with a podium in Race 2, coming 3rd which is our first podium of the season. After today’s podium result and the direction we have headed this weekend, I feel confident that we can turn things around tomorrow and be racing for a win once again.” Hook: “Race 1 didn’t really go to plan, we struggled a bit with the bike setting and it was a difficult one for me and the team. For Race 2 we made a pretty significant change in set-up and the bike was a lot better. We were racing a lot closer to the front and our lap times came down. Overall, we made headway and will continue to build on that going into Round 5 tomorrow. The bike definitely feels a lot more consistent and I am looking forward to tomorrow’s races.” Focused on the direction that his team is heading in after Race 2 today, Team Principal, Paul Free has the technicians working hard tonight to refine the changes and begin Round 5 tomorrow afresh. Free: “Race 1 today for both Jamie & Josh was nothing short of disastrous. Looking at that result it was obvious we needed to make wholesale changes to the bikes to move forward which we did and they proved to be successful. We moved from Race 1 finishing many seconds behind the lead; to Race 2 where Jamie was within striking distance. Both riders had a much more consistent motorcycle throughout the race and the lap times were similar to the front runners. Tonight we are just slightly refining the direction we found going into Race 2 this afternoon. It all comes down to grip. Where earlier in the event we were concerned with trying to get the bike to ride the bumps; now we are focusing on grip and overall ride-ability over the race duration.”
