Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves Yamaha’s Cameron Beaubier destroyed the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike lap record during provisional qualifying Friday at Miller Motorsports Park. Beaubier, riding his YZF-R6, recorded a time of 1:53.637, eclipsing Jason DiSalvo’s 2011 mark of 1:55.291 by more than 1.6 seconds. It is the fourth consecutive event in which Beaubier has set a new lap record for the Daytona SportBike class. “This morning I struggled a little bit getting up to speed,” Beaubier told reporters. “I was kind of struggling trusting the tires just because the track was a pretty slick and it was a little dirty and stuff. But my third stint out on the bike felt pretty good. I got more comfortable and I was trusting the bike more. I think the reason why the times are so fast, so much faster than before is because we came here in the middle of summer and before we came here [when] it was really cold with tires shredding and stuff. The Dunlop tires have been awesome this weekend. We’ve got a good setup. [We’re] still working on a couple of things in some of the fast corners, trying to get the bike more planted and stuff. But yeah, I’m feeling good. Maybe we’ll see what we can do tomorrow morning. It seems like it’s warming up pretty fast here in the mornings. I think it will be good.” Beaubier’s teammate Garrett Gerloff was under the lap record in practice and again in provisional qualifying, but he crashed during the provisional qualifying session and had to settle for a second-best 1:54.724. Gerloff lowsided in Turn Five and suffered no injury, he said. Jake Lewis, like Gerloff a rookie in the Daytona SportBike class, was right behind Gerloff in provisional qualifying with a 1:54.844 on his Meen Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6. Jason DiSalvo put his Latus Motors Racing Triumph Daytona 675R on the provisional front row with a time of 1:55.135. His teammate Garrett Gerloff, who rides the #8 R6 and was fastest in the morning practice session, currently sits in second position on the provisional grid, with final qualifying to set the pole and final DSB grid scheduled for 8:50 AM MT tomorrow morning. After his record-breaking session ended–at the fourth racetrack in a row on which he’s broken the track record–Cameron said, “We dialed in my Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R6 this morning, and it felt really good during the qualifying session this afternoon. The track is starting to come in a little bit and, being here in the middle of the summer, I think, has helped me go a little bit faster than we have when we’ve come here in the spring. Everything’s going great so far, and I really like riding on this track.” Garrett said, “This morning, I didn’t think the track was going to be good because there was a lot of dust on it. But, we went out and everything felt fine. I’ve done a lot of laps here at Miller–more than at any other track we visit–so I was comfortable from the start of practice, and I was glad to be P1 after this morning’s session. In Qualifying, everything felt fine, and I was on a fast lap. Going into Turn 5, I may have had the brakes on a little too hard when I hit a bump, and I had a really easy lowside. I picked up the bike, rode it back to the pits, and got on my ‘B’ bike. It felt a little different to me, and I needed to get used to it for a few laps. I started getting back up to speed, but I wasn’t able to put in a really fast lap before the session ended. So, I’m looking forward to tomorrow morning’s final qualifying because, for me, colder temperatures work better here at Miller.” After final qualifying for Daytona SportBike tomorrow morning at 8:50 AM MT, DSB Race 1 will go green at 1 PM MT. More, from a press release issued by GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing: GEICO Honda rider Westby looking to surprise fellow competitors SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 2) – Being seventh-fastest wasn’t quite what Dane Westby had in mind during the first GoPro Daytona SportBike qualifying session on Friday afternoon at Miller Motorsports Park. Westby, riding his GEICO Motorcycle Honda, laid down a best lap of 1:56.107 in a 21-lap run during the 50-minute qualifying session, which was good for the conditions. “The track started off pretty slick today, especially in the morning practice,” Westby said. “There is a lot of dust blowing around out here, so it is hard to find the limit. The rear (of the bike) was sliding around a lot, so you are always wondering what is going to happen with the front. Finding out the limits of the track was the main issue.” Westby spent the week leading up to this GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series event training in altitude in California, and while that helped his conditioning, it didn’t help make the bike go any faster. “The bikes are just slow,” Westby said. “Everybody is slow. It won’t even do a wheelie coming out of the corner, but for the riders it is not too bad.” But Westby has plenty of room to make his bike quicker for Saturday’s second and final qualifying session. “I’m taking a different line than I would like right now, so we are going to set the bike up a little differently, ” Westby said. “I am having a little trouble with the exit drive, just carrying me a little bit wide. I am V-ing up the corner more than a U-type shape, but we are going to try to adjust that because I am probably one of the only guys doing it. I’m making it work, but I would rather be like everybody else.” If he stays seventh, the Tulsa, Okla., resident is sure he can surprise a few of his fellow competitors. “We are experimenting with some launch control this weekend, and we will see what happens there,” Westby said. “I definitely just need to get a good start and we should be able to hang with that front group. I think it will mess with their heads a little bit just to see me at all.” The field will be set following the final qualifying session on Saturday, which starts at 8:50 a.m. Race 1 will kick off at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Race 2 at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
