Testing unearths new performance potential for AMSOIL EBR SuperBike team SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 1) – There’s not been much rest for AMSOIL riders Geoff May and Aaron Yates between races in the National Guard SuperBike series, but thanks to some extra effort, the pair goes into this weekend’s GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series stop at Miller Motorsports Park full of confidence. Yates, rider of the AMSOIL/Hero EBR, spent much of the last couple of weeks in Arizona with his crew testing some changes the team hopes will yield more power. “I spent some good time with my guys in Tucson,” Yates said. “We’ve been working on the bike and got a little track time in too. We’ve made some pretty good steps forward as far as chopping down our lap times. We’re excited to see how it works out at Miller.” The veteran rider said his team’s main focus has been on the ignition system. “This test session came together at the last minute but it’s been good for the team to get their hands on the bike for an extended period of time,” Yates said. “We’ve put a lot of work into the whole electrical control side of things. After this test, I think we’ve got it working pretty decent and that should translate to a little more horsepower.” That extra steam will come in handy at Miller because Yates said the track can handle a lot of speed on its 3.05 mile, 15-turn layout. “Miller is so different from many other tracks,” Yates said. “It’s got such long, long straightaways and fast corners. This track is just so spread out and big. With the way this AMSOIL/Hero EBR has run the last couple of rounds and the extra horsepower we’ve found, I’m looking forward to this weekend.” After a string of strong finishes, May and Yates have both moved into the Top 10 in the SuperBike points. May, who rides the Team Hero/AMSOIL EBR, sits eighth, 16 points in back of seventh-place Chris Fillmore. Yates is in ninth, nine points behind his teammate May and two points ahead of 10th-place David Anthony. Like Yates, May said his team recently made a significant discovery of its own. “We were thrown kind of a curveball this year with the American Dunlop tire,” May said. “I think we figured out once and for all in Laguna that our notes from last year just don’t translate. We finally hit on something really big Sunday at Laguna and I think it will carry over at Miller.” May added that he’s going into Miller will a lot of confidence no matter what. “It’s one of my favorite racetracks, probably because I won my first AMA National event there,” May said. “There’s some nostalgia there so I’m looking to come away with another podium finish. It’s a place I always roll into with a big head of steam and a lot of confidence. The weekend just seems to go a lot better right from the start at a track like this. “I’ve been on the podium just about every time I’ve been to Miller. My confidence and good history at a track really go hand-in-hand.” Practice for the National Guard SuperBikes gets under way at noon MDT Friday from Miller Motorsports Park. The first qualifier will roll off at 3 p.m. Friday. The field will be set following the final qualifying session that starts at 9:40 a.m. Saturday. Race 1 gets started at 3 p.m. Saturday with Race 2 at 3 p.m. Sunday. CBS Sports Network will air Saturday’s racing starting at 3 p.m. EDT and Sunday’s racing starting at 1 p.m.
