Ducati is considering supplying complete, updated 2013-specification Desmosedici racebikes to private teams for the 2014 FIM MotoGP World Championship. That’s what Ducati MotoGP Project Director Paolo Ciabatti said in a recent interview appearing on the official MotoGP website. Ciabatti pointed out that under the proposed 2014 rules, a team could run an updated Desmosedici GP13 with more fuel capacity (24 vs. 20 liters) and a greater engine allotment (12 vs. five) than factory teams running prototypes as long as the private teams use the control Magneti Marelli ECU (Engine Control Unit) and software on the Ducati. Ciabatti said Ducati could possibly run four factory prototypes and four customer bikes in 2014, but he did not say whether the customer machines would be leased or purchased. Honda has already announced plans to sell complete production racebikes in 2014, and Yamaha plans to lease MotoGP engines to private teams next season. Update: Ducati’s proposed plan is to sell the MotoGP racebikes, not lease them.
