MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo’s motivation to ride in the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is very high, according to Lin Jarvis, the Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing. Lorenzo crashed during the first day of practice June 27 at Assen and broke his left collarbone. He had surgery overnight, returned to Assen on race day June 29, lined up 12th on the grid and finished fifth in the race, one position behind Championship rival Dani Pedrosa. After his heroic performance at Assen, Lorenzo rested and rehabilitated his injury and arrived at Sachsenring July 12 feeling good for the German Grand Prix. Maybe he was feeling too good, according to Jarvis, because Lorenzo crashed again on the first day and re-injured his left shoulder, resulting in more surgery, and he missed the German GP. Now, just three days after having surgery to re-stabilize his fractured collarbone with a new titanium plate and 10 screws, Lorenzo is traveling to the United States with strong motivation to compete in this coming weekend’s Red Bull U.S.G.P. “Yesterday, he had a medical check in Barcelona,” Jarvis told reporters during a press conference at Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. headquarters in Cypress, California on Wednesday. “Of course, the doctors would recommend he take rest to recuperate, because the doctors should always recommend you to rest to heal an injury, but he feels good enough to try [to ride]. “So he will be flying in today. He’ll arrive late tonight. Then he’ll have the standard procedure of the medical control at the circuit. If he passes the medical control then he plans to ride this weekend. Until he gets on the bike we don’t know how he’ll feel, but the motivation is very high. Let’s say the good fortune he had is unfortunately due to Dani’s situation [a crash during practice at Sachsenring that resulted in a fractured collarbone, a suspected head injury and a missed race], he hasn’t lost too many points in the Championship. So the top three are extremely close now, and he doesn’t want to miss this opportunity to be there.”
