It was Cameron’s fifth win out of six races so far this season. Cameron actually went faster in the race than he did on his record-setting lap in Saturday morning’s final qualifying session, which is a notable feat considering how much warmer the track conditions were on the 2.4-mile, 15-turn road course. He got a good jump at the start but was shuffled back a little bit going into the first turn, and the race was on. Cameron battled back into the lead and slowly, but surely, stretched out a comfortable lead to the finish line. “I really want to thank my Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team for giving me a super-fast R6 today, Cameron said. “It was great to dice for the lead a little bit there at the beginning of the race, but I’m glad that I was able to get to the front, and put in some clean, fast laps to get the win.” Also starting the race from the front row was Garrett Gerloff, who is Cameron’s teammate and rider of the #8 Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R6. Garrett also found himself in a pretty good dogfight on the first lap, and it became a theme for the Texas rider, as he raced in a pack of really fast riders throughout the contest. He finished in a hard-fought fifth place and is clearly looking for better results in tomorrow’s DSB Race 2. Garrett said, “I got a pretty good start, and I was actually in front of Cameron after the first turn. We were all bunched up at the beginning of the race, and there was quite a bit of passing among the frontrunners. Things opened up a little as the race went on, but by that time, I was looking at a fifth-place finish. I’m not happy with that position, by any means, so we’ll re-group tonight and focus on a better result tomorrow.” Daytona SportBike Race 2 from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 PM EST. More, from a press release issued by GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing: Westby finishes sixth to start Buckeye SuperBike Weekend LEXINGTON, Ohio (July 13) – Dane Westby battled his way to a sixth-place finish on his GEICO Motorcycle Honda in the GoPro Daytona SportBike race on Saturday at the Buckeye SuperBike Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire, Saturday’s stop in the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing Series. Westby started the race with eventual winner Cam Beaubier in his sights but got held up by some other bikes along the way. “I got a better start than I had been getting,” Westby said. “I was still the last guy off my row. Beaubier was right in front of me and cutting one guy at a time. I thought, ‘Ok, I’ll just stay with him.’ ” With the leader pulling away, Westby settled into a battle with James Rispoli. “Rispoli held me up for a few laps,” Westby said. “Where I was strong, he was just strong enough to hold me. I probably should have been more aggressive. “I feel like I can be more aggressive and not let those front guys go. We all ran fairly similar lap times, so I need to stay aggressive tomorrow.” Westby said the track surface at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, while tricky in a few places, was a lot of fun to ride. “It was slick where the patches are, per usual,” Westby said. “The non-patched sections were pretty darn good. You had to watch the off-camber section at the top of the hill because it was different every time, but it was a lot of fun to ride.” Beyond Sunday’s final race of the weekend, Westby said he’s looking at everything he does to help shave a few fractions of a second a lap off his times. “I’m thinking about changing my training routine,” Westby said. “I’ve probably got to lose some poundage on these front guys. I’ve been doing a lot of flat-track riding but probably need to introduce some more cardio to what I do to prepare.” There is still one more race in the Buckeye SuperBike Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire. Race 2 rolls off at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The race will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network at 2 p.m. More, from a press release issued by Team Hammer PR: SOLIS EIGHTH IN MID-OHIO AMA PRO DAYTONA SPORTBIKE Team Hammer came away with a pair of top-10 race results on Saturday of the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing’s Dane Westby and M4 Broaster Chicken Racing’s Benny Solis improved upon their qualifying positions to finish sixth and eighth, respectively, in the hotly-contested, 21-lap Daytona SportBike race. Westby, a two-time winner at the 2.4-mile circuit, opened his race from the outside of Row 2 after being taken out by another rider and crashing late in final qualifying. The Oklahoman regrouped and ultimately battled with the second group, running as high as fourth en route to a solid sixth-place result on his Team Hammer-prepared Honda CBR600RR. Solis, meanwhile, worked his way forward from his third-row, 10th-position starting slot to finish eighth. The result continued the Californian’s upward climb, as he’s taken progressively stronger finishes in his last four races. “I got my best result of the season so far, so that’s good,” up-and-comer Solis said. “We’re moving forward little by little, but I definitely want to be in that front pack that keeps breaking away from me. Today I noticed where they were pulling me. I was trying my best not to let them pull me. We’re trying to improve the bike’s set-up and made some more changes after the race, and we’re going to test it in the morning. If it works, the race will be better and if it doesn’t then I’ll just have to ride around it. Now I know where I can improve and where we can improve the set-up of the bike, and that’s the goal for tomorrow.” Broaster Chicken/MPH Racing’s Melissa Paris rounded out the day for the squad in the SportBike race by finishing 17th on her Team Hammer Contract Services-prepared Honda CBR600RR. Superbike pilot Chris Ulrich also demonstrated encouraging progress. Ulrich and his crew made a major change to his M4 [http://sportbiketrackgear.com/] SportbikeTrackGear.com Racing CBR1000RR prior to the race and the decision paid off. The Californian ran in 14th during the contest’s opening stages before systematically working his way up to 11th. After the race, Ulrich admitted, “After final qualifying we decided to change to a link with a different motion ratio for the race. It was a 100% Hail Mary, but we thought we knew what it was going to do after we computer-modeled it. So we did that and it worked in the race. “We got a good start and moved forward. We still need to work on some things, but that’s a step in the right direction. We finally figured out the amount of support that I need for the bike — big springs. Once we’d gotten to that point and accepted it, it’s starting to work. We’re making progress on that end. We’re still struggling a little with the electronics we have to use–getting the hang of the position on engine braking to suit the grip level and changing the TC maps is definitely another deal. We’ve been fiddling with that and learning there. “But as far as the race goes, I moved up four positions in the race and that was positive. I made some passes and made some moves and put together a good string of laps. Am I happy? No — I need to be going quicker and finishing better, but we’re getting there.” Team Hammer will conclude the Mid-Ohio AMA Pro Road Racing event on Sunday with the second-half of the weekend’s Daytona SportBike and AMA Superbike doubleheaders.
