Yamaha Keep it Shiny & Sustainable in Mugello Mugello International Circuit (Scarperia, Italy), 31st May 2013 Yamaha Factory Racing riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo are doing their part for the environment and playing key roles in two very important initiatives. Nine-time world champion Rossi has been appointed as FIM Environmental Ambassador, representing the organisation’s sustainability policy. The appointment of such a high profile ambassador has clear advantages in helping to spread the key environmental messages through the motorcycling world’s various audiences, including journalists, racing fans, federations and clubs. Reigning World Champion Lorenzo is also rising to the environmental challenge with his teammate Rossi as promoter of the KISS (Keep it Shiny & Sustainable) programme. With World Environmental Day (5th June) fast approaching, the FIM, Yamaha Motor Racing, Dorna, the Mugello Circuit and IRTA are all working together to promote the green initiative, starting with activities to keep the Mugello Circuit clean over the Grand Prix weekend. Both Lorenzo and Rossi, together with other riders, will promote the initiative directly to their fans through their social media channels over the race weekend. Their fan clubs will also get involved, driving the message home as visibly as possible to keep Mugello clean. A special press conference hosted by the FIM, Dorna, IRTA, the Mugello Circuit and Yamaha Motor Racing’s General Manager Marco Riva today has kick-started the activity. Special videos are also available online from both Lorenzo and Rossi, discussing the importance of the initiative. Racing fans themselves will get to be the stars of the campaign as the Mugello Circuit have created a special KISS Mugello Facebook page (www.facebook.com/kissmugello) with a gallery of videos and images of Mugello race fans doing their bit for the environment to keep the circuit clean. The 10 best good environmental practices videos could win the opportunity to be VIP guests in Mugello in 2014. Valentino Rossi “I am proud, honored and happy to have been appointed as FIM Environmental Ambassador. Definitely it is not so easy to spread out a “green” message within our sport but FIM, Yamaha and all the parties involved in this initiative teach us that it is not impossible! All riders should commit to help our world to make one step forward in terms of sustainability. I will play my role and I will help motorcycle racing to adapt itself to the needs of our environment. All riders will do their outmost to give the best show to the fans, so let me ask the fans to do their outmost to give us the best landscape throughout the weekend!” Jorge Lorenzo “Supporting the KISS Mugello project is great honor and pleasure. The Mugello Circuit always gives great show on track to the fans but the real beauties of this track are outside the fences: the green hills that surround it! I am delighted to be the detected “media” for spreading the “green” message to all the spectators and I hope similar projects will be promoted by other circuits too. I want to ask the hundreds of fans who will come to Mugello to keep the landscape clean during and after the race weekend. I want to commit with you all: if you take few seconds to make a “green” gesture, we will pay you back with a great show on track!” Marco Riva Yamaha Motor Racing, General Manager “There is a nice sentence that matches with Yamaha’s Corporate Social Responsibility policy: “Sport is sustainable when it meets the needs of today’s sporting community while contributing to the improvement of future sport opportunities for all and the improvement of the integrity of the natural and social environment on which it depends” (D. Chernunshenko). Yamaha Motor Racing strongly believes that MotoGP events are an ideal ground for sustainable development because of their ethical image and because they inspire passion and emotion. MotoGP riders are the perfect ambassadors of sustainable behaviour. The KISS Mugello project has the aim to gather all members of the motorcycle community during the Mugello GP and inspire them to act in harmony with nature, keeping the wonderful hills of one of the best circuits in the world clean. Yamaha Motor Racing is proud to be member of the KISS Team and special thanks go to Yamaha Motor Racing’s Green Partners RCM, Airbank, Eco12 and theValentino Rossi Fan Club!” Vito Ippolito Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), President “In 2012, on World Environment Day, the FIM launched the FIM Environmental Ambassadors programme. The idea is to involve top riders from different disciplines to pass on messages about sustainability and make our public and fans aware on the importance of respecting the environment. The original five Ambassadors were Marc Márquez, Randy de Puniet, Takahisa Fujinami, Laia Sanz and Ken Roczen. We are now happy to welcome Valentino Rossi, a living legend in our sport, as a new member of this team. With the help and involvement of these great riders, we are confident that our environmental messages will be well received by the spectators. We also congratulate Mugello Circuit and Yamaha for having shared the idea of the KISS Mugello project and we are happy to participate in this great initative together with them, Dorna & IRTA. If we want to organise sustainable events, it is of the utmost importance that all the stakeholders of our community get involved in common projects to help us do things better.” Paolo Poli International Mugello Circuit, CEO “As Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello, we are very proud to be the first circuit to host the KISS (Keep it Shiny & Sustainable) programme in support of the separate garbage collection, an initiative that will become a point of reference at an international level and that will be repeated in other circuits. The Ferrari circuit has always been committed to caring for the environment by promoting many initiatives focused on the respect and the preservation of the territory. Among the green solutions that we promoted, I’d like to remind that the roof of the new grandstand with 4,500 seats is covered with a photovoltaic system with a thin film technology able to produce 260,000 kw equal to the 25% of the total need of the circuit. This allows us to avoid the emission of 211tons of CO2 per year. Moreover, the pavement was coated with a special ceramic material treated with titanium dioxide, that, thanks to the photovoltaic process, reduces the air pollution. The Iso 14001 certification and the European EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) registration show our commitment for environmental sustainability”. More, from a press release issued by FIM: MotoGP KiSS Mugello! We have pleasure in presenting today the launch of the project “KiSS Mugello (Keep it Shiny and Sustainable)”, for which all sectors of motorcycling have pooled their efforts: the Mugello Circuit as organiser, Yamaha as representative of the industry, the FIM with its Ride Green sustainability programme, Dorna as an unwavering ally and promoter of the sport, riders with prestigious reputations, among them the FIM Environmental Ambassadors, as well as the spectators, the press and others. To make sustainable sports events a success, all stakeholders need to work together, and that is the very essence of this project. Those of us who enjoy this sport know the Mugello Circuit that lies nestled among the beautiful Tuscan hills. Its exceptional location has prompted the organisers to engage in actions to help to preserve the beauty of the countryside, safeguard its resources and manage in an appropriate way the waste generated by an event of this type. Selective waste collection is one of our main challenges this weekend, and for that we need to raise awareness among the crowd. The riders will play a key role here by sending awareness-raising messages to the spectators via the giant screens and TV, using social networks and throwing their full support behind this project. Racing fans themselves will also get to be stars of the campaign, as the Mugello Circuit has created a special KiSS Mugello Facebook page (www.facebook.com/kissmugello) with a gallery of videos and images of Mugello race fans doing their bit for the environment and to keep the circuit clean. The 10 best “environmental good practices” videos could win their creators an opportunity to be VIP guests in Mugello in 2014. KiSS Mugello will be the first phase of a series of projects of this type involving other circuits around the world. Top representatives of the various stakeholders have expressed their commitment to the aims of the project. Paolo Poli- International Mugello Circuit, CEO “Here at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello, we are very proud to be the first circuit to host the KiSS (Keep it Shiny & Sustainable) programme in support of separate waste collection, an initiative that will become a benchmark an international level and will be repeated at other circuits. The Ferrari circuit has always been committed to caring for the environment by promoting many initiatives focused on respect and the preservation of the land. Among the green solutions we have promoted, the roof of the new 4,500 seat grandstand is a particularly significant. If we want to organise sustainable events, it is of the utmost importance that all the stakeholders of our community get involved in common projects in order to help us do things better.” Carmelo Ezpeleta – CEO of Dorna Sports “Dorna has been involved in the KiSS Mugello project from the outset. As organiser of MotoGP™ since 1992, the very least we can do is to tirelessly support all environmental initiatives in a bid to respect and conserve the natural world. Back in the day, the Championship witnessed the replacing of two-stroke engines with four-strokes in order to lessen its impact on the environment, and this KiSS project will help us all in keeping the beautiful Tuscan circuit of Mugello clean after Sunday’s Grand Prix. The most satisfying element is seeing how the World Championship riders are so aware of how we must all work together in order to take these schemes forward.” Hervé Poncharal – IRTA President “Looking after the environment is absolutely vital and the MotoGP community should pass the message to all our fans around the world that recycling and keeping the area around where we race clean and environmentally friendly is very important. Protecting the environment is something that everyone in the World Championship takes very seriously. We need to show the world that although we are using high performance engines, we are conscious of our commitment to taking care of the environment in the best way we possibly can. There is a lot of research and development done in this sport in order to reduce fuel consumption. Next year the official factory machinery will be reducing fuel tank capacity from 21 to 20 litres, so fuel consumption is essential. When you are racing in a beautiful environment like Tuscany and the nature is unbelievably stunning, it is even more important to care about the surroundings and leave it as you find it.”
