Decker and Pianykh take a string of victories at Masters of the Mountains Round 2
May 29, 2013. Tooele Utah – The second round of UtahSBA’s Masters of the Mountain saw Canadian Scott Decker and local rider Oleg Pianykh take a rout of victories on Miller Motorsports perimeter track this past weekend.
Round two of the championship boasted a sizable turnout of racers – some of which were preparing for the upcoming WERA National and AMA Pro-Racing events scheduled to be run on the same configuration later this season. Racing got off to a start Saturday morning with Pianykh securing two victories in the Deseret Dash double-header on his Moto-Station prepared Suzuki GSX-R1000.
Scott Decker never put a wheel wrong all weekend and firmly stamped his authority in the Middleweight classes taking wins in King of the Mountain GTU, Heavyweight Superstock and Middleweight Superbike. In the premier King of the Mountain GTU event, strategy was the name of the game as Decker made the holeshot into Turn one and progressively gapped the remainder of the field in the opening laps. This saw his fellow Canadian Royce McLean and local rider Jerry Hicks engage in a relentless battle for the remaining podium positions. On the third lap, McLean made a seemingly impossible pass on the short straight between the Clubhouse and Wind-up Corners and secured the second podium slot.
No rider could have been more devastated this weekend than that of Hicks. After being engaged in the thrilling six lap King of the Mountain ‘U’ battle, and within striking distance of the finish line that promised him a well earned third, his Honda CBR600RR expired with a mechanical failure. A disappointed Hicks reminisced after the race: “The bike just shut-off on the last corner and I coasted and pushed the bike to the finish line. It is so disappointing.”
Despite a crash on the warm-up lap for the Open Superbike race, Oleg Pianykh redeemed himself; winning a tightly fought battle during the King of the Mountain ‘O’ race. When the flag dropped, the machines of Pianykh, Jesse Sherstan and Bodhi Edie screamed three-abreast down Miller’s long straightaway and into the fast Sunset Bend. It was Pianykh who emerged the hole-shot leader with his rivals close behind. The Suzuki GSX-R1000 of Sherstan hounded Pianykh for the remainder of the race – challenging his rival at the Blackrock Hairpin and then again at the entry of Clubhouse.
“I could hear him [Sherstan],” Pianykh said after the race. “I just kept my head down. I could see the signals from my pit-crew on the pit wall and knew that he was close.”
Sherstan was relentless, but it was Pianykh who took victory with Sherstan only tenths of a second adrift. The BMW S1000R piloted by the young Canadian Bodhi Edie secured a well-earned third.
In the amateur classes, local rider Damien Olson took home two first place trophies for wins in the Sportsman class and also in the Novice GTO race. In his first year of racing, Olson is a student of the RacingExperience program and races with the Team Five ‘O’ Racing team.
“We’re a team of Law Enforcement Officers, and this is our first season of racing with the UtahSBA,” Olson said. “Last round I took second in these classes. With a little more practice this weekend I got my first wins of the season.”
