Jack Kennedy, 24 More, from a press release issued by PTR Honda: PTR HONDA’S Sheridan Morais scored his first finish of the 2013 season with sixth place at the fourth round of the World Supersport Championship at Monza in Italy, with team mate Luca Marconi a close 10th. With the race running to conclusion on the fourth start after a series of crashes, Sheridan worked his way through the field from a lowly 14th during the first lap to a strong result, running the same lap times as the leaders once he was clear of traffic. Sheridan said: “I am happy to finish the race given everything we have had to deal with. To go from 14th to sixth is good. By Donington my shoulder injury should be a lot better and that is positive too. My confidence is high because at the end of the race I was doing good lap times and that is very promising.” Luca was battling with his teammate for much of the race and was running seventh on the final lap before making a mistake and ending up 10th. It equals his best ever result in the class, achieved at Aragon earlier this season. David Linortner on his PTR Honda also enjoyed a good day to take his first points, scoring 14th place in the 10-lap shortened race. He finished just ahead of his young rookie teammate Matt Davies who took an impressive 16th as he starts to show his real potential. The Australian was just over a second behind 11th place so can take great heart from his performance. Nacho Calero got off to a slow start but took a decent 20th at the flag as he built up his speed and would have benefited from full race distance. The next round of the Championship is at PTR’s home circuit of Donington Park in England on Sunday, May 26th. Simon Buckmaster, PTR Honda Team Manager, said: “PTR has made a big step forward this weekend. Sheridan made a slow start but when he got through he had the same pace as the leaders. That is really positive for us. To be back in the top six and running those times means we should be racing at the front at Donington. “Luca rode a great race but made a mistake at turn three and was passed by other riders. It is still a very good result and he now knows he can run inside the top 10 competitively and should improve from here. “It is great to see David get his first points of the season and that will hopefully give him the confidence boost he needs to challenge for the top 10; he certainly has the ability. “Matt was disappointed to finish a fraction of a second off points but I am delighted with his progress. He is now there fighting with the group for points and he is impressing me with his speed and talent – his first scoring result is not far away. “Nacho got a good top 20 finish and comfortably beat his qualifying time in the race, so can take that positive to the next round and we look forward to more progress.” Race Result 1. However, his team-mate Michael van der Mark was left with a broken foot following a crash-strewn afternoon. The race, eventually won by Sam Lowes, was red-flagged no fewer than three times, finally running after today’s second World Superbike race at the 5.777km Monza circuit, with both Pata Honda riders involved in two of the three incidents. In the first part, several of the leading riders, including Zanetti, crashed out on oil left from an earlier crash at Variante Roggia. Part two was halted when part of the air-fence at the Ascari chicane was damaged in another crash. In part three, Zanetti was taken out from third place by another rider at the Prima Variante – Monza’s infamous first chicane – with van der Mark crashing on the resulting debris. The 20-year-old Dutchman sustained four broken bones in his left foot and was forced to miss the final re-start. Suffering from an extremely sore back, Zanetti was only able to take part in the race thanks to a remarkable effort from his team who had to build an entirely new CBR race machine for him after his main bike suffered severe damage in the earlier crash. The 26-year-old Italian rode superbly throughout the 10-lap race, underlining his impressive pace throughout his home-race weekend, to take a well-deserved third place for both him and his Pata Honda team. Lorenzo Zanetti – 3rd It’s been an incredible weekend. I was near the front in every session and we worked very hard for that. Today was bad, though, and I crashed twice and have a lot of pain in my back. The bike was completely destroyed in the second crash and the team did not only a good job – it was a fantastic, incredible job to build a new bike. I could not ask any more from them. I tried really hard in the race which was luckily only 10 laps and I was fighting for a win, but it was positive for me and the team to finish on the podium. I thank them a lot. Michael van der Mark – DNS It was a lot of chaos with all the red flags and, on the third start, I think everybody was in a bit of a panic and some guy made a stupid move and Lorenzo got hit as a result. I was thinking I was going to be lucky to avoid it but the crash put mud and grass on the track. When I entered the corner, I lost the rear and highsided. When I landed I thought my foot was painful but was able to bring the bike back. I knew the foot was not right so I went to the Clinic and they made an X-ray. I have four broken bones but they say it will be ready for Donington. I wanted to ride but they said it was not possible and that’s just a shame for the team because we worked so hard all weekend. In the first two starts I was in quite a good position but I hope in Donington we can get a better result. The red flags were all good decisions and these things happen but it seemed like today they didn’t want a Supersport race! Pieter Breddels – technical co-ordinator It was a very hectic afternoon with three red flags. On the third occasion, some rider hit Lorenzo and he fell. Because of that, more riders crashed including Michael, who broke some bones in his foot and could not take part in the restart. The race finally took part after the second Superbike race, but this gave us time to build a complete new bike for Lorenzo. He was actually the fastest guy on the track, got the fastest lap and could have won it. But he finished third and we are really happy to end the weekend with a podium finish after some bad luck in Superbikes and with Michael getting hurt. We are third and fifth in the championship and it’s still early days, so not so bad. 2013 World Supersport championship, round four Autodromo Nationale di Monza, Italy – 5.777km, 10 laps Race results: 1 Sam Lowes (GBR) Yamaha 2 Florian Marino (FRA) Kawasaki 3 Lorenzo Zanetti (ITA) Pata Honda 4 Roberto Russo (ITA) Kawasaki 5 Kevin Coghlan (GBR) Kawasaki 6 Sheridan Morais (RSA) Honda Championship points after four of 14 rounds: 1 Lowes 70, 2 Foret 54, 3 Michael van der Mark (NED) Pata Honda 49, 4 Sofuoglu 45, 5 Zanetti 40, 6 Scassa 34. Next round: Donington Park, UK – 24-26 May More, from a press release issued by Kawasaki: Marino Second After Four WSS Race Starts At Monza WSS, Monza, Italy, 12 May 2013 Mahi Racing Team India duo Fabien Foret and Kenan Sofuoglu were not in luck today as neither scored points but Florian Marino (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres) secured a confident second place. The race was started and then stopped not once but three times before it was postponed to the end of the day’s regular action. The first halt came after a crash that involved both Sofuoglu and Marino who each fell on oil at the second chicane. The final running of the race was cut to ten laps from the planned 16. Marino had qualified second and replicated that finish in the race after a great battle with three other riders. Fabien Foret was injured in a crash in the third of the red flag incidents and could not make the final restart, having been taken to hospital in Monza for check-ups. Riccardo Russo (Puccetti Kawasaki) was a battling fourth on his Ninja ZX-6R, with Kevin Coghlan (Kawasaki DMC-Lorenzini Team) fifth, but still only 1.487 seconds from the win. Luca Scassa (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres) was a top eight finisher, while Vladimir Ivanov (Kawasaki DMC-Lorenzini Team) was ninth. After a highly disturbed day of competition at Monza Sam Lowes leads in the points, with Foret on an unchanged 54, and Kenan still fourth on 45 points. Scassa is sixth with 34 points. Kenan Sofuoglu: “Three times they stopped the race and I think everybody lost a bit of concentration. Then they said it would just be a ten lap race and in a ten lap race I knew I had to try everything to go away from the riders behind. I saw that there was 0.6 seconds of a gap but I wanted to make more, because in Monza when you get a good gap then you can go away. Maybe I pushed too much. It is not nice because this is the fourth race and I made zero points twice, so it is not going the way we want it. There are still nice races to go, and I will try to close the gap.” Florian Marino: “I think Sam Lowes was just a bit faster than me today but it was a great result for us and my first podium in this class. I had to take some time to get back into the rhythm after one of the crashes earlier in the day, but I just took some time to think. I have to say thanks to the guys in my team for the great job they have done.”
