Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Byrne had set the pace in free practice and carried that momentum forward into qualifying, running at near lap record pace, as he gave the pretenders to his crown a reminder that he has his sights firmly set on a record-breaking fourth title. “The aim was to be on the front row of the grid,” said Byrne. “We still have some work to do but as the saying goes – so far, so good. Myself and Kiyo are obviously both aiming for that fourth title but there are plenty of other riders who won’t make it easy for us starting tomorrow here at Brands Hatch.” Alex Lowes closed his Samsung Honda to within 0.142 seconds of Byrne and was satisfied with his performance, he said: “There’s no doubt that Shakey is the man around here, but I enjoyed us all going for it again in qualifying. The lap I did was my best lap time around Brands Hatch; I was a bit nervous not to do too much too soon but I am really happy with the front row start.” Third fastest was James Ellison, returning from MotoGP to ride for Milwaukee Yamaha, and he joked about his return to the front row: “My crew chief told me not to come back to the garage if I was not up at the front, so I am happy enough with third. Shakey set a hot pace out there but I am happy that I am in a good position for the races tomorrow.” Buildbase BMW’s Jon Kirkham completes the front row which features four different manufacturers as he edged out Keith Farmer on the second Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki. Last season’s runner-up Josh Brookes, returning triple champion Ryuichi Kiyonari and American PJ Jacobsen complete row two ahead of James Westmoreland and Dan Linfoot as six teams featured in the top ten qualifiers. The Buildbase BMW Motorrad team have secured their first front-row start of the season, with Jon Kirkham qualifying in fourth position on his BMW S 1000 RR. Kirkham set a lap time just 0.4 seconds off pole position, earning him a spot on the front row of the grid for the first race of the 2013 season. Team mate and fellow British Superbike racer James Westmoreland also made it through to the Q3 session, securing eventual ninth place overall following a blistering Q2 lap time which saw him the fourth fastest in that session. Lee Jackson will start from the second row of the National Superstock 1000 race tomorrow, having secured eighth place on his BMW HP4 race bike. Jon Kirkham said: “While we didn’t quite get as much testing over the winter as we would have liked, it has all paid off today with a front row start in the very first race. I didn’t aim for the front row but it feels very good to be here. I’m taking nothing for granted, but we are in a fantastic position and I’m very much looking forward to the racing tomorrow.” Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: “It’s been a fantastic start to the weekend and the 2013 season. Last year we secured a front row start at the final round; this year we’ve fought our way there on the very first outing. All three riders have done very well so far, but it’s just the beginning. Roll on tomorrow and the very first races of the year!” Tomorrow’s racing will be broadcast live on British Eurosport 2 from 12:30pm. British Superbike qualifying results 1) Shane Byrne (Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki) 2) Alex Lowes (Samsung Honda) 3) James Ellison (Milwaukee Yamaha) 4) Jon Kirkham (Buildbase BMW Motorrad) 5) Keith Farmer (Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki) 9) James Westmoreland (Buildbase BMW Motorrad) National Superstock 1000 qualifying results 1) Adam Jenkinson (SMT Kawasaki) 2) Simon Andrews (RAF Honda) 3) John McGuinness (Padgetts Honda) 4) Jonathan Railton (WD40 Kawasaki) 5) Filip Backlund (ILR Kawasaki) 8) Lee Jackson (Buildbase BMW Motorrad) More, from a press release issued by Milwaukee Yamaha: FRONT ROW START FOR MILWAUKEE YAMAHA AT SEASON OPENER The Milwaukee Yamaha team will start the opening race of the 2013 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship season from the front row after James Ellison qualified third at Brands Hatch with Josh Waters lining up on row four. Ellison proved he has the pace to be in contention for a podium finish in the opening races of the season at Brands Hatch tomorrow as he continued to push for the front row, ending just 0.315 seconds adrift of pole-sitter Shane Byrne. Waters continues to get to grips with the Milwaukee Yamaha and having experienced the qualifying format for the first time is now looking forward to his race debut tomorrow from sixteenth. Ellison said: “I am enjoying the Milwaukee Yamaha and I have gelled with the bike straight away. It is nice to be at an event where you know you can be fighting at the front every weekend. We have been working hard all winter and the team have done a great job but these other guys will make it difficult in the races. I am happy with qualifying third as normally I am not that good in qualifying if I am honest! If today is anything to go by then we should be good for the races tomorrow.” Waters said: “I obviously would like to have been higher up the order but we have made some changes and then tomorrow with a good start I think we can aim higher. The qualifying system was new to me so that is something else I have learnt today so I am feeling good. I was happy that I could string together the laps consistently and that is what is important; to keep moving forward.” For more information visit www.milwaukeeyamaha.co.uk More, from a press release issued by Team Suzuki News Service: Tyco Suzuki’s Josh Brookes and team-mate PJ Jacobsen will start from row two in the opening MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship race of the season tomorrow at Brands Hatch in Kent. Both GSX-R1000 riders made the final qualifying Q3 session this afternoon with Australian Brookes taking sixth and the 19-year-old American BSB rookie impressing in eighth in his full BSB debut. Josh Brookes: “Yeah, I’m sort of happy with that even though sixth place is not a qualifying position I’d normally settle for. It’s all about making progression at this stage of the season and while I’d like to be up front dominating, we just didn’t have the pace to do that today. I’m not overly-bothered about some of the guys in front of me who I see as one-lap wonders.” PJ Jacobsen: “That was really good today. I had aimed for top-10 or 12 in the first qualifying of the season and I didn’t think with the limited time on the bike I’ve had, that I’d be making the front two rows. I am pretty happy with what I’m doing everywhere on the track; I just need a little bit more confidence braking down into Graham Hill Bend. Tomorrow is all about being nice and smooth in race one and we can take it from there.” Philip Neill – Team Manager: “It’s a tough start for everyone with the weather we’ve been having and the limited testing time we’ve all had, but I’m happy with that today. Josh is comfortable starting from the second row and I’m delighted with PJ on his debut. We have a little bit of work to do and a few things to try in the morning but we are going in the right direction.”
