Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne got his MCE Insurance British Superbike title defence off to a flying start at Brands Hatch today as he set the pace following the opening two free practice sessions ahead of Sunday’s opening races. The rider from nearby Sittingbourne sat out the morning session due to the cold conditions, but fired himself back to the top of the times in the second session. Byrne said: “It was a bit frustrating this morning – I was like a kid at Christmas wanting to play! This afternoon I feel happier as we have done some laps and I am feeling positive that it can only get better now before Sunday.” Returning triple champion Ryuichi Kiyonari also sat out the morning session, but in the afternoon was quickly on the pace, topping the times at the half-way point of free practice two before ending in fourth place overall. Two young-guns separated the triple champions after the second free practice session as Alex Lowes pushed the Samsung Honda to the second fastest time and Tommy Bridewell proved that he will be back in contention with the Bathams Honda squad in third.

James Ellison lapped consistently aboard the Milwaukee Yamaha to be fifth overall on his return to the Championship, only 0.036secs faster than last year’s runner-up, Josh Brookes on the Tyco Suzuki. Buildbase BMW’s James Westmoreland ensured five manufacturers were represented in the top ten with his seventh fastest time.

Former multiple British Supersport champion Karl Harris on the PR Racing Kawasaki was marginally faster than Jakub Smrz aboard the Padgett’s Honda with Chris Walker completing the top ten on the Quattro Plant Bournemouth Kawasaki. For more information please visit www.britishsuperbike.com

MILWAUKEE YAMAHA BACK ON TRACK AT BRANDS HATCH Milwaukee Yamaha began their 2013 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship campaign at Brands Hatch in Kent today (Friday), however with cold conditions hampering the opening session the team made progress in the afternoon session with James Ellison and Josh Waters ending fifth and fifteenth respectively. Ellison was able to complete 28 laps this afternoon as he clocked the fifth fastest time as he returned to the SMR team, whilst Waters completed similar mileage as he continues to get to grips with the circuit as he prepares to make his race debut. Ellison said: “Today was alright to be honest but the track temperature did make things a bit sketchy, although it was the same for everyone and it is all relative. I said to my crew chief Mick (Shanley) that I wanted to be within 0.5 seconds of the fastest time this afternoon as we didn’t want to push too much in those conditions so I am happy enough. We have some big changes for tomorrow and then we will see what it brings for qualifying.” Waters said: “It has been a steady day as we didn’t really get any proper laps in this morning but I am not too worried as we have another free practice tomorrow. I think for me, I have just been getting my head around the track and once I have slept on it tonight I will be ready to push on again tomorrow. I know we can pick up some time so we just need to hope for some more dry conditions.” In the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship William Dunlop ended the opening day on track in seventeenth place.
