GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing’s Dane Westby has been hospitalized after crashing his new Honda CBR600RR twice during AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike (DSB) practice Thursday at Daytona International Speedway. A total of 11 riders crashed during the chilly (57 degrees F) first DSB practice, according to AMA Pro Racing, and most of those crashes occurred in the middle of the left-right-left chicane on the back straightaway. Both of Westby’s crashes happened in that same spot, but during the second crash the Oklahoma rider got hit by his motorcycle. Westby returned to the paddock with the crash truck but immediately sought medical attention. He was transported to Halifax Medical Center, according to Daytona International Speedway spokesman Andrew Booth. “He was complaining of abdominal pain, so he had a CT scan,” said Chris Ulrich, owner of Chris Ulrich Racing and the GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing team. “He has some bruising on his spleen, so he’s going to be held overnight for observation. It’s a real bummer because he was ripping.”
