The talented team newcomer was second quick in the practice aboard his Honda CBR600RR, lapping at 1:54.006. The youngster from North Hollywood, California came back in the day’s second Daytona SportBike session and dropped his time by more than a second with a quick lap of 1:52.939, good enough for eighth in a practice session held in high winds with plenty of crashes from other riders. Solis avoided trouble and will now focus on Friday’s two qualifying sessions. Meanwhile, Chris Ulrich took to the track on the hugely promising M4 Broaster Chicken Honda CBR1000RR Superbike on Thursday. After years of racing aboard another brand of motorcycle, Ulrich is relishing the opportunity ahead with the new program. Despite having just one day of testing prior to Daytona, the Californian was tenth fastest in the opening free practice of the season. He further improved upon his practice time of 1:43.366 with a 1:42.806 during the afternoon’s first qualifying session. That mark placed him 13th provisionally with tomorrow morning’s second session remaining to decide the grid for the season opener. “It’s a big change — we’re figuring out what makes the Honda chassis tick,” Ulrich said. “Rolling into Daytona with limited testing isn’t ideal but it’s the situation that we’re in and we’re pleased with how it is going. We were tenth this morning and 13th in the afternoon and we did go quicker. We picked up some very good information and we’re making wholesale changes for tomorrow to try to get the bike to do what I need. We were taking little chunks out of it until we figured something out with the front end that we need to do, and now I expect to make more progress tomorrow morning.” Commenting on the vast potential of the Honda CBR1000RR, Ulrich said, “It’s a great platform to go racing with. It’s so great to have a new challenge. It’s refreshing and I’m excited. This is probably the highest spec Superbike that I’ve ever raced aboard. We have some engine management stuff to get sorted out too but we’ll get it all figured out.” The squad will return to the famed high banks of Daytona on Friday with Solis set claim his grid position for Saturday’s Daytona 200 and Ulrich competing in the Superbike season opener. More, from a press release issued by LTD Racing: PROMISING OPENING FOR HUNTLEY NASH AND LTD RACING AT DAYTONA Daytona, FL (March 14, 2013) — LTD Racing and Huntley Nash opened the 2013 AMA Pro season on Thursday at Daytona with an excellent day for the young rider. Nash was 6th and 11th in the practice sessions for the historic race. Nash, making his third Daytona 200 start this weekend, found himself in competitive form on the long course used for Saturday’s race. Huntley’s goal, to run with the lead pack in the race, came one step closer when he found the speed to run inside the top ten in the morning, showcasing the skill he has developed in his time on the AMA Pro tour. The former SuperSport race winner was pleased to show good form in the afternoon, too. “On one lap, I had a draft but we were slow through the infield and the next lap I was able to go fast through the infield, so my ideal time was pretty solid at 1:52.875. That’s a good start and what I’m really looking forward to is getting to go for 57 laps. The previous 200-mile races, something has always happened but we’re working hard to have a positive weekend to start the year.” Nash has been training with multi-time Daytona champ Scott Russell in Atlanta, reviewing races and taking in a little advice from Mr. Daytona. “I’ve been training hard and really ready to get back on the track with the team and see what we can do. The team has worked hard and I gave them some extra work when I had a crash at Jennings a few days ago, but everyone pitched in and we had a good day. I’m excited for this chance in the Daytona 200.” Nash will qualify for the Daytona 200 in two sessions on Friday.
