AFM Returns to Action at Buttonwillow The AFM kicked off its 2013 season with some familiar faces taking wins while a new one made his intentions known to the rest of the paddock. Reigning champion Ricky Corey would hold on for the win in the first Bay Area Riders Forum Formula Pacific race of the year, edging out veterans Lenny Hale, Jeremy Toye and Chris Siglin. The rider of the day though had to be 16-year-old Tucker Lancaster, who would take his Pirelli-equipped YZF-R6 to two wins, a second place and a sixth place in Formula Pacific, beating out many 1000cc machines in the process. A third win was a near certainty until a mechanical DNF left the young Lancaster pointless instead. Lancaster was also the only 600 rider of the weekend to dip into the 1:48s, only about a second off of Formula Pacific winning times. After an exciting preview in Open Superbike, Bay Area Riders Forum Formula Pacific would see its largest grid in recent memory as a swarm of racers tried their luck in the AFM’s most competitive class. Ricky Corey would enjoy pole position as returning champion, flanked by Chris Siglin, Lenny Hale and Martin Szwarc. Corey would lead from the start on his Dunlop shod YZF-R1, followed by Lenny Hale on his Dunlop shod GSXR-1000. Chris Siglin would be the man on the move though. After losing a spot on the start he responded by pushing his Pirelli-equipped BMW S1000RR HP4 to the fastest lap of the race and past Hale. The fourth lap would be where the race was essentially decided. After passing for the lead, Siglin would run wide out of the exit of the final corner, allowing Corey, Hale and Toye to pass. Toye, also on Pirelli tires, would hold that spot to bring his Kawasaki ZX-10R home in the final podium spot behind the winner Corey and runner up Hale. “I have to give a huge thanks to Dunlop Racing Tires for helping me figure out my rear end issue from the Open Superbike race,” Corey said from atop the podium. “The track’s a little cool this weekend and we were having some issues with some tire compounds. We switched it up and the bike works a lot better.” The win gives Corey a five point lead and pole position for round two at Sonoma Raceway in May. Other notable racers included Mike Nigliazzo who beat class champion Berto Wooldridge in Formula 1 for his first ever AFM win and Jason Catching who rode his SV650 to wins in 650 Production and 650 Twins. The first race of the season also brought out a fresh class of Novice racers. Standouts included Gage McAllister who split time between an XR1200 and CRF450R to rack up four Novice class wins and Wyatt Marshall who pulled down three wins and five podiums riding a ZX-6R and YZ450F. Round two brings the series to Sonoma Raceway on May 4th and 5th in what promises to be another exciting weekend of action. Kenny Anderson (Kaw 250R) More, from a press release issued by RCR Performance: After not having raced at Buttonwillow Raceway since 2010 due to rain-outs in 2011 and 2012 it was good to be back at this track again to start the 2013 season. The grid for Formula Pacific was the largest I have seen for many years and the level of competition lined up to do battle promised to make it an exciting and challenging race weekend. RCR Performance (Ricky Corey Racing – www.rickycoreyracing.com) is defending the current 2012 #1 plate for the AFM Formula Pacific Championship and is now the points leader for the 2013 AFM Formula Pacific Championship Series after the first round. “We went into this race weekend knowing that we were going to have some tough competition and that’s exactly what we got. The level of competition and the largest Formula Pacific grid in years, made for a challenging and entertaining race weekend, along with track conditions that were not ideal due to low temperatures and cloud cover reducing track temperatures, equaling low grip levels. From the start of the Formula Pacific race, all the way to the end it was a struggle to keep my RCR Performance Yamaha YZF-R1 from spitting me off from all of the rear wheel spin. The bike is making a bit more power this season making it even more difficult to ride on this track where I can only get to full throttle for maybe 3 seconds out of an entire 1:47 second lap. Fortunately, I was able to get the hole-shot at the start of the race and hold the lead until lap 4 when Chris Siglin made a pass on me a few turns before the front straight. Chris led for a couple of turns until his rear tire started to slide entering turn 11 and he was unable to keep the bike on the track. I was then able to stretch the lead out to around 2 seconds ahead of new second place runner Lenny Hale, giving me enough of a gap to keep an eye on my pit board and maintain a comfortable pace to secure the victory.” Formula Pacific On-Board Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyAbwltZY6A RCR is also the 2012 AFM Open Superbike Champion and is competing for the 2013 AFM Open Superbike Championship. RCR placed second after a hard fought battle with Jeremy Toye and Chris Siglin in this race. “Similar to the Formula Pacific race I was able to get the hole-shot in Open Superbike but was unable to maintain the advantage over Jeremy Toye for very long. Toye and I had a fantastic battle throughout the entire race, swapping positions almost every lap. The battle slowed our pace enough by the end of the race to allow Chris Siglin to catch up and make his move to take the lead. Coming out of the last turn on the last lap with Siglin in the lead and Toye in second, I had to rely on a good drive and the brute horsepower of my RCR Performance Yamaha YZF-R1 to get by Toye down the straight and secure 2nd place.” Open Superbike On-Board Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0Zamz3ELEk We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the AFM staff and turn workers for putting on such a well organized and safely run race weekend. We also want to send out a special thank you to all of the sponsors that help make the RCR Performance race team successful, race in and race out. RCR Performance – Engines Built to Win!
