New Event Logo Debuts for 2013 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix Design Draws Inspiration from the World Famous Corkscrew MONTEREY, Calif. (February 13, 2013) A dynamic new event logo has been created for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix featuring the MotoGP™ World Championship by Red Bull’s Austrian design firm, Sign. Inspiration was drawn from studying the lines of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s most famous series of turns, the Corkscrew, which drops an equivalent of 5 1/2 stories in just 450 feet. Over the years, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the Corkscrew have taken on an almost mythical status in the world of racing. Interestingly, the race track wasn’t the creation of a famous designer such as Hermann Tilke. Instead, the track was the creation of Salinas architect Wallace Holm and his equipment operator, Jerry Blair. It is easy to imagine the Corkscrew being the creation of a genius, but to hear Blair tell it, there was really no other choice, considering the terrain and the location of the oak trees that surround it: “On the dozer, it was the only way to go,” he said simply. “You’ve got to get down. Just look at the pictures. It’s easy to see why we drove the dozer that way and cut the track.” The Corkscrew is also one of the favorite turns of MotoGP™ riders including current World Champion Jorge Lorenzo, while his Yamaha Factory Racing teammate Valentino Rossi has one of the most memorable moments in motorcycle racing history, “the pass,” overtaking rival Casey Stoner in the dirt through the Corkscrew. “This is the ninth year of MotoGP racing here and the sport continues to gain popularity in the US,” says Gill Campbell, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca CEO/general manager. “The new logo illustrates the power and energy of our race track and the motorcycle racing itself.” Advance purchase general admission for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix starts at $40, with a three day general admission pass only $90 and children 12 and under are free with a paying adult.
