After winning the 2012 AMA Pro SuperSport East Championship with rider Jake Lewis, Vesrah Suzuki is shutting down its professional AMA Pro Road Racing operation and downsizing to a one-rider development program for the 2013 racing season, according to Team Owner Mark Junge. “I’m going into the development mode instead of going to the AMA and spending a bunch of money,” Junge told Roadracingworld.com Thursday. “So I’m going to take Nick McFadden WERA racing and to track days and stuff. Then, after he turns 16 in June [2013], I think we can do four East Coast AMA [SuperSport] rounds. That’s the plan.” Getting motorcycles, parts and sponsorship to go racing in 2013 wasn’t a problem, said Junge, who has retained all of the sponsors, like Nielsen Enterprises, that have been with his team for years. But the high-pressure, high-cost environment of AMA Pro Road Racing wasn’t providing the return on his investment of time and resources, he said. “I think we can get more exposure [for Vesrah brake pads] by doing track days and doing local stuff to sell brake pads than we can [by] spending $500,000 to race in AMA,” said Junge, who will also ride in WERA National Endurance events with the BEi Racing/Dunlop Development Team in 2013. Asked why he was putting so much faith in McFadden, a 15-year-old from Owensboro, Kentucky, who just won the 2012 WERA 600cc Superstock National Challenge Championship, Junge said, “He’s the next Jake [Lewis].” Vesrah Suzuki will also continue building engines and complete racebikes for customers at its Union Grove, Wisconsin race shop.
