The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held the final round of Big Bike Endurance, Mini Sprints, and Mini Endurance this past Saturday, November 9, at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. Both the 2.9-mile and 1.8-mile short courses were utilized on Saturday, bringing the 2012 Endurance and Mini Sprints season to a close. Temperatures in the upper 60’s, 25-30 mph gusting winds, and partly cloudy skies made racing conditions tricky, keeping the track temperature cool and bringing debris onto the track as well. Big Bike open practice ran on the 2.9-mile course while the Mini sprints and 2-Hour Mini Endurance ran on the 1.8-mile short course, and Big Bike Endurance ran later in the day on the 2.9-mile course.
The 2-Hour Mini Endurance had a combined grid of 24 teams, with the classes of Formula 4, Formula 5, Formula 6, and Formula 7 Endurance. The Davis Rod and Cycle team, consisting of Jesse Davis, Ryan Andrews, and Brandon Altmeyer, riding a Kawasaki EX250, set the fastest lap of the race, running a 1:22.399. The team went on to take both the win in Formula 4 and the overall endurance win. The Cycle Rod & Davis team; Ryan Andrews and Brandon Altmeyer on a Kawasaki EX250, took second in both Formula 4 and the overall. Rounding out the top three overall was the RyderHard Racing team of Jane Ryder, Ken Ryder, Shawn Diamond, Jay Newton, and Thomas Anderson with a Kawasaki EX250. They also took third in Formula 4.
The 4-Hour Big Bike Endurance had the largest showing of the year, with a combined grid of 36 teams, with classes A Superbike, C Superbike, Fastline Motorcycle School Formula 2, and Modern Classic Endurance. The Desert Rats Racing team of Derek Thomas, Stephen Guynes, Rick Hogge, and Greg Wanless, on a Yamaha YZF-R1, took the early lead, holding off the two top point leader teams, Village Idiots and NORDCO Racing. Competition was fierce, with the top 10 teams already turning laptimes at the 1:53 mark and below by the third lap of the race. A red flag was brought out at around the 7 minute mark in the race due to two bikes coming together in Turn 1, and lasted 38 minutes. After the restart, the Desert Rats Racing team kept the pressure on, setting the fastest lap of the race: 1:48.290, and holding onto the race lead. The Village Idiots team; John Orchard, Chris Headley, Blake Cochran, and Brandon Cleland on a Yamaha YZF-R6, were in hot pursuit with the 212Decals.com team and NORDCO Racing hot on their heels. As the afternoon progressed, the temperatures dropped and the wind picked up. Despite that, the lap times remained fast, and the 212Decals.com team of Dirk Anderson, William Guthrie, Brandt Dillon, Landon Talley, and Allan Campbell on a Suzuki GSX-R1000 edged NORDCO Racing. When the checkers dropped at 5:00 pm, Desert Rats Racing would take the win in A Superbike and the overall win – their first win this season. Village Idiots would take the win in C Superbike and second overall. 212Decals.com Racing would take second in A Superbike and third overall.
Derek Thomas, team owner of Desert Rats Racing had this to say, “We’re a little bit of an older group and just came out this season to have fun. Going into this weekend, we were looking to put in a good showing. Conditions were dicey with the wind and the track conditions, and we watched a lot of people go down in practice on Friday. We use a round robin starting order, it was Steve’s turn to start, and we couldn’t have planned it better. He immediately got down into the 1:48’s and ran a very good pace despite the weather and him being a little sick. The red flag helped out the teams with smaller tanks a lot – we ended up only having to make three stops after that. We pitted at the end of the third rider stint, and Steve got back on the bike with 35 minutes to go. Our pit stops were good, we all ran very well, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. I’d like to thank Jim Cambora at RaceworX for the suspension, Vesrah brakes, Whoopies Cycles and Dunlop tires, Stadium Yamaha, Cycle Concepts, and Davis Rod & Cycle. We won a championship in 2006, and it was great to be back on the top of the box again. We’re really looking forward to 2013.”
