The Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider made the perfect start to Saturday’s race but was under constant pressure from title contender Lowes who had qualified his WFR Honda on pole for a fourth time in five rounds as they battled for supremacy at the front. But as the race entered the closing stages it was red flagged when light rain began to fall with Lowes crashing out at Clearways and the race was red flagged. Byrne had a mixture of relief and delight as he enjoyed the late 36th birthday present he had given himself as he said: “I have a feeling of relief, but aso it is so good to have the race win. I was trying to do the maths a couple of laps earlier as I didn’t want the race to be stopped before a result could be declared. “Coming through Clearways the last time it was horrible, the bike was snaking all over the place, so I am really pleased to take this win. Looking to the final two races, we’ve got a good race setting, I’m confident of my race pace and just hope the weather is good and I can stay ahead of these guys again,” added Byrne who is aiming to equal the record by taking the title for a third time. Reigning champion Tommy Hill took second place for Swan Yamaha as he kept his outside hopes of retaining the silverware alive, as he goes into the final races trailing Byrne by 47 points, while Tyco Suzuki’s Brookes who finished third has all to play for starting only 18 points down on the series leader. But there were mixed fortunes for other two Title Fighters. Tommy Bridewell, riding through the pain of a nasty finger injury sustained in a crash in free practice took seventh place on the Supersonic BMW with Samsung Honda’s Michael Laverty, who had been running third for the first half of the race running wide and dropping back to tenth, with both of them now out of the chase for the title. Hill had qualified on the second row but fought hard with his title rivals throughout the race to move up the order to third; however as Alex Lowes crashed out just before the race was red flagged for rain the defending champion claimed second place. Noriyuki Haga had a difficult qualifying session, finishing in 19th and with work to do in the opening race but scored an eighth place finish. Hill said: “You can almost cut the atmosphere with a knife, we want to win and that is it. We don’t want to see Shakey winning, we are doing a job and that is to win. I came here and was on the back foot but we have two more races tomorrow to try and go one better. I have been putting pressure on myself as I don’t want to be fifth or sixth, we want to be on the top step. Last time we were here we won the championship and it is difficult for us unless Shakey gets food poisoning tonight! It is so close this year and if we can get up there early on in the races it could make it much easier.” Haga said: “We made some improvements for the first race today, but we still need more for tomorrow and the last two races. We had a bad qualifying so the first race wasn’t easy but we made up positions and eighth place was some good points. The 2012 MCE British Superbike season reaches a climax tomorrow with the final two races with Brookes now 18 points behind series leader Shane Byrne with a possible 50 up for grabs. Brookes’ Tyco Suzuki team mate Alastair Seeley finished today’s shortened race in 19th position when the red flags came out because of rain. Josh Brookes: “I got a reasonable jump but got boxed in a bit at turn one, then made good progress. I rode strong for a while then when the brake started to fade I adjusted the adjuster, but it was the wrong way, which made me run into Hawthorn carrying way too much speed. I got it sorted and clawed my way back but the damage had already been done. I did make some good passes, but when it started to rain at the end I really needed some more laps. It was getting pretty slick out there and I was surprised to be third at the end when Alex fell. It’s not a satisfactory result but the pressure is now off me and I’ll just go out and do my best in tomorrow’s two races and hopefully that is enough.” Philip Neill – Team Manager: “We are obviously disappointed to drop behind and tomorrow will be a tough task at one of Shakey’s best tracks. We have to be honest and say we didn’t have the package to beat him here today but we will still try the best we can tomorrow as a team.
