ROCKSTAR ENERGY’S LORENZO SCORES SUPERB SAN MARINO GRAND PRIX VICTORY LOS ANGELES, CA Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo brought his 2012 race win tally to six today, leading from the start grid to take victory in the Grand Prix of San Marino. The victory was doubly special for Yamaha as it was achieved running a special Yamaha ‘Race- Blu’ livery. The race itself started in dramatic fashion after Karel Abraham stalled on the grid causing yellow flags to come out and the start lights to remain on. Confusion followed with some riders false starting. In the chaos archrival Dani Pedrosa suffered some technical issues and was then relegated to the back of the grid. The Spaniard was soon to crash out of the race, giving Championship leader Rockstar Energy’s Lorenzo the opportunity to wrap up Misano having secured a 38-point advantage and a total of 270 points from his six wins and six-second place finishes. “It’s been a very tough weekend because Dani and I have been very close in the qualifying and the warm up,” said Rockstar Energy’s Lorenzo. “Unfortunately today he had really bad luck, first with the lights at the beginning of the race and then Hector took him out. This was really unfortunate for him. In Holland we were unlucky and today he was unlucky, anything can happen in these races. We have to be happy with our result and the point advantage we now have, for sure we are much more calm now than before the race! The race was difficult for everyone, only having qualifying was not enough when you have to set up the chassis and electronics and everything for the race. It was hotter during the race so there was less grip too. I almost crashed in turn one but managed to save it too!” The next event for Rockstar Energy’s Jorge Lorenzo is round 14 of the 2012 MotoGP Championship at the Grand Prix of Aragon in Alcaniz on September 30th. More, from a press release issued by Bel-Ray: Bel-Ray Weekend Racing Wrap Up- September 17, 2012 The Misano World Circuit in Central Italy was the host for this weekend’s Gran Premio Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera de Rimini. This race marked the thirteenth round of the sixteen-round 2012 championship series. Bel-Ray supported Team Aspar Racing was in action with the team’s racers competing in MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3 racing divisions. MotoGP In MotoGP class competition, the Bel-Ray sponsored Power Electronics team of Randy DePuniet and Aleix Espargaro arrived at Misano as the top CRT racers in the series. Espargaro held a slight four-point advantage over his teammate DePuniet prior to the weekend’s events. De Puniet leaves Misano with a three-point advantage. A ninth-place finish by DePuniet and an unfortunate DNF by Espargaro put the French rider ahead of his Spanish teammate. “I am happy because when Hector (Barbera) touched me just after the back straight I was lucky not to crash,” said DePuniet after the race. He continued by saying, “I lost a lot of places and I was nearly at the back of the group. I needed to force things in order to regain ground. I reached Aleix (Espargaro) and stuck with him for seven laps. I didn’t really feel very comfortable because after running off track, I noticed that the bike was locking up at the front on all the right handers. I decided to wait to pass my teammate. At the end of the race, he unfortunately had a mechanical issue and was unable to continue, so I’m sorry for him. We were able to complete the race, took a lot of points and are back in front in the CRT standings.” Espargaro was disappointed with his DNF but remains optimistic looking toward the end of the season. “It was a real shame to have the problem as I’d got away well. It was tough to get into race pace in the early stages but lap by lap I was getting more comfortable. Today I was quicker than I had been earlier in the weekend and once my teammate caught me I was able to fight properly with him. If I had not had that problem, I would still be provisional CRT leader, but now is not the time to worry about that. There are five races to go and we need to keep fighting.” Moto2 With the season beginning to wind down, the Bel-Ray supported Mapfre Aspar Moto2 team of Nico Terol and Jordi Torres continue to make improvements to their machines. They continually strive for the ultimate in performance and handling, and each week has continued to be a learning experience. At the checkered flag, the Spanish duo was fifteenth and sixteenth place with Terol gaining the better position. He spoke about his race following the day’s events. “Despite everything, I am happy because in the warm-up we found the way forward that we had at Brno again. Thanks to this way of working, we were able to make the bike turn much better. I lacked a bit of decisiveness at the end. I have a very fine style and get a bit thrown off my race when I come up against other riders, as it is hard to keep the same line. I will have to keep getting used to riding side-by-side with other riders in order to overtake more easily. I am satisfied because in the end we were able to make a comeback and pick up another point. I hope to continue like this at the next race; the team has worked very well and I am sure that we will be back to how we were at Brno, and in the race today, when we head to the next race.” Torres also spoke about his race and the continual improvements they’ve made to the bike this season. “At the beginning of the race I got blocked in by a lot of riders who passed me aggressively. I am not completely used to that and found it difficult to refocus. The fact that the race was restarted was very good for me, because I was able to learn more. On the restart I had trouble finding a gap, but I still stood firm and controlled my group. However, I made a mistake at turn six and the bike nearly went down, leading me to run off the track to avoid being thrown from the machine. I lost a lot of places then, which annoyed me and forced me to come back more focused. I started to put down a strong pace, the bike responded well and I was able to take sixteenth. It was another learning weekend for me; the mechanics worked to adapt to my riding style and I adapted to the bike more in each session. I am happy and hope to continue like this at Aragón.” Moto3 The Moto3 class has consistently produced very close racing this season and this weekend’s race in Misano was no exception. Bel-Ray racer Jonas Folger of the Mapfre Aspar team finished the race in sixth-place despite crossing the finish line one second behind the race winner. Contact at the beginning of the race forced Folger’s teammate Hector Faubel to struggle as he was not part of the lead pack of racers setting the pace. He would cross the line in thirteenth-place with his efforts. Folger was disappointed that he couldn’t keep his podium streak alive and will use his sixth-place finish as motivation for the rest of the season. “Today was a very close race and I finished just a second off the winner. I am happy because we did a great job this weekend. It is just a pity that we couldn’t cap it off with another podium. Even though I didn’t take another podium and I am annoyed about that, I will keep the motivation from this for the next race.” Faubel was disappointed with his thirteenth-place finish but content with his riding during the weekend. “At the start of the race I was going well and maintained my position. I went into the double ‘S’ on the inside, passing three riders. But there was a lot of contact and we lost touch with the lead group. Alongside (Zulfahmi) Khairuddin, I pushed hard to latch back onto the front pack and improved upon my qualifying times. I hoped that those ahead of me would slow each other down, but they never let up. I couldn’t do much more. It is positive that we finished 14 seconds behind the podium finishers despite starting from so far back, but I am not happy with thirteenth. I think that we deserved a good result, but it wasn’t to be here. We now have to keep working our hardest to place as well as possible at Motorland.” The series for all three classes continues on September 30 in Spain at the Motorland Aragon circuit. After the finale of the IDM, Manufacturers’ champion BMW Motorrad looks back at a successful 2012 season Erwan Nigon claims the Riders’ title. Munich/Hockenheim, 18th September 2012. Eight rounds, 16 races and two titles for BMW Motorrad: last weekend the 2012 season of the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) drew to a close with the finale in Hockenheim (GER) a season, in which the BMW S 1000 RR riders in the fiercely-competitive IDM Superbike class were in a league of their own. Erwan Nigon (FRA) of Team Van Zon alpha Technik BMW secured the title in the Riders’ Championship, while BMW dominated the Manufacturers’ standings and ended the year with a huge lead. A large part of the success was down to BMW Motorrad HP RaceSupport and BMW Motorrad Deutschland, who assisted the BMW teams with all their needs. Over the course of the eight race weekends that made up the 2012 IDM season, BMW riders and teams in the Superbike category picked up no less than 37 podium finishes: ten wins, 14 second places and 13 thirds. Among the highlights of the season were the races at the Nürburgring (GER) and Red Bull Ring (AUT), at which BMW riders occupied every single step on the podium. Thanks to this level of success, BMW successfully completed the defence of its title in the Manufacturers’ Championship with two rounds to spare on the sixth race weekend of the season in Schleiz (GER). BMW scored a massive 644 points in 2012, 403 more than second-placed manufacturer Yamaha (241 points). Furthermore, it was already clear coming into the final races in Hockenheim that the title in the Riders’ Championship was also destined for an RR rider. Three BMW riders were still in with a chance of being crowned champion at the finale. Nigon eventually clinched the title with 258 points, ahead of Austria’s Michael Ranseder (Technogym Racing Austria Fritze Tuning / 250 points) and Jörg Teuchert (GER / 224 points) of Team Wilbers BMW Racing. Fourth place went to Teuchert’s team-mate Gareth Jones (AUS / 197 points), also on an RR. The BMW riders were left to fight it out at the front of the field again in the final races in Hockenheim: Damian Cudlin (AUS) of Team RAC Racing BMW finished ahead of Nigon to win the first race. Ranseder won race two, with Cudlin crossing the line in second place. “I am delighted to have won the title,” said 2012 IDM Superbike champion Erwan Nigon. “The IDM is a high-quality championship. The standard of competition is extraordinarily high and there are so many strong riders. I think, generally speaking, that I had the best overall package and the best support. That was the key to winning the title. I would like to say a huge thank you to my team, HP RaceSupport and BMW Motorrad Deutschland. The season was not easy for me, as it was my first year in the IDM and I was racing for the first time at some of the circuits. However, my team and HP RaceSupport have so much experience that they know exactly how to set the bike up for each track and which settings are required for the engine, gearing and traction control. They also helped me to get to know the circuits and find the right lines quickly. On top of all that, I believe the RR is the best bike out there. The engine is class it is unbelievably powerful. At the same time, the bike is really easy to ride. It goes without saying that I always had to push during the races, but I had so much confidence in the bike that I was able to do just that. I just feel at home on the RR.” “Firstly, congratulations to Erwan Nigon and his team on winning the title,” said Berthold Hauser, Head of BMW Motorrad HP RaceSupport. “For us at HP RaceSupport, the fact that all of the top four positions in the championship were occupied exclusively by BMW riders just goes to confirm the perfect cooperation between the teams and our specialists. A huge thank you goes to the teams and riders, who fought so hard to achieve this overwhelming result. All the other BMW riders also produced an impressive season for our brand. Winning the Manufacturers’ title with races to spare and the success in the Riders’ Championship underline the dominance of the RR in this top-class racing series. We can all be proud of what we have achieved together.” “We are very pleased to have not only picked up the Manufacturers’ title for the second year in a row with the BMW S 1000 RR, but also to have won the Riders’ title in the IDM Superbike class for the first time. We are very proud of that,” said Kosta Lagoyannis, Head of Marketing BMW Motorrad Deutschland. “It is such a high-class series that you cannot just turn up and win easily. We finished second and third in the Riders’ Championship in recent years, and were determined to finally get our hands on this title. As such, we are all the more delighted to have achieved our goal. The RR was the dominant bike this year. Thanks to the strength of the production package of the bike, it can relatively quickly, and with little modification, be one of the front-runners in top-class racing series. The engines, which work at their very limits, also have a long life cycle. All this has resulted in an ever-increasing number of riders and teams putting their faith in the RR.” “However, a team also needs support in order to make it to the very top,” added Lagoyannis. “An immense financial outlay is required in order to compete for the championship, as the IDM features four or five enormously strong teams from various manufacturers and with top-class riders, who are all capable of winning the title. This is where the support we gave Team Van Zon alpha Technik BMW and Team Wilbers BMW Racing paid off. Winning the Riders’ title with Erwan Nigon is a nice acknowledgement of our commitment.”
