(Sept. 8) — Martin Cardenas came up a few inches short of tallying his seventh AMA GoPro Daytona SportBike victory of the season Saturday, but his runner-up finish to Cameron Beaubier in Saturday’s first race of the American Red Cross Devil’s Showdown still added six points to his championship points lead with five races remaining on the season. Cardenas now has 10 podium finishes in 14 starts this year and unofficially leads second-place Dane Westby by 70 points heading into Sunday’s second race at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The 29-year-old Colombian gained four points with Saturday’s finish and collected two more bonus points for being low qualifier and leading the most laps (11 of 23). Westby came in third after starting in 13th place. “It was a very good race for me,” Cardenas said. “I made two very good starts (the second after a red flag) and got out front each time and tried to fall into a nice rhythm. But these other guys made it very challenging. They were with me the whole time and there was lots of passing. Nothing out of line; just very clean, hard racing between one another. “It was a great battle and at the end I tried to make a move to get around Cameron but I was just a little bit short. The GEICO Suzuki team did a great job, as usual, and we will try again tomorrow a little bit harder and see what happens.” Beaubier passed Cardenas going into Turn 1 of the final lap and managed to hold off the GEICO Suzuki at every turn. In the final straightaway Cardenas used the draft to try and slingshot around Beaubier at the finish line but came up .023 seconds short. The intense, back-and-forth racing among the front group of riders proved Cardenas isn’t taking it easy en route to what could be his second Daytona SportBike title, even though his sizable points lead adds up to more than two full races of action. “I try not to think about that because it’s very distracting and I think it can cause you to make a mistake very easily,” Cardenas said. “I just ride my race and try to do the best I can. Of course, I try not to take big, big risks, but I still take risks and try to win every race. We are all here to win. Today I just didn’t have quite enough.” The Daytona SportBike class will hold a warm-up session at 9:30 a.m. followed by the second main event, beginning at 2:15 p.m. SPEED TV will air Saturday’s race at 9 p.m. and Sunday’s race starting at 11 p.m. More, from a press release issued by Yamaha: Devil On A Blue Bike, As Cameron Beaubier Wins Saturday Daytona SportBike Race At New Jersey Motorsports Park Millville, NJ September 8, 2012 The American Red Cross Devil’s Showdown saw a devil on a blue bike blitz the field in AMA Pro Go Pro Daytona SportBike, as Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha phenom Cameron Beaubier worked himself to the front, and then into the lead, on the final lap, winning DSB Race One at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The victory was the fifth out of the past six races for Cameron, who has been on the podium in 10 out of the 12 races he’s started this season. After his victory, Cameron said, “After the restart, I got shuffled back a little bit, but I just kept working and got myself back up in the front group where I could try to get to the front. I usually like to make my move sooner than the last lap, but these guys race hard, and I had to wait till the end. It all worked out, and I couldn’t be happier.” Cameron’s teammate and rider of the #22 Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha YZF-R6, Tommy Hayden, finished fifth in today’s DSB Race One, with Race Two set to go green on Sunday at 2:15 PM EST. More, from a press release issued by LTD Racing: IMPROVEMENT FOR NASH IN NEW JERSEY Millville, NJ (September 8, 2012) Huntley Nash was able to charge inside the top ten in the first AMA Pro Daytona SportBike race at New Jersey, although the young racer ultimately finished 14th in the contest, one position ahead of where he qualified. The Georgian was able to get a great start and run inside the top ten after a red flag. While he wasn’t able to maintain the pace, he gained valuable knowledge as he continues to improve during the AMA Pro race weekend. The former SuperSport race winner was able to make up one spot on the final lap as he set his second-best lap of the race on worn tires on the final time around the 14-turn track. “I had a really good start and was up in sixth or seventh or something after the red flag. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to hold it, but I went for it,” said Huntley. “After that, I settled in to where I was going to be and then made up one position at the end. We got to run a lot of laps and I found the weak spot with the bike and we’re changing out the shock right now for tomorrow. I ran into problems in two key areas and that’s where I was losing the majority of my time. The bike was a little unbalanced and we’re balancing it. I think we can find a little more pace for tomorrow.” Nash will contest the 23-lap finale at 2 PM local time tomorrow. More, from a press release issued by Team Hammer: FORWARD PROGRESS FOR WESTBY IN NEW JERSEY M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby made a stunning return to form on Saturday at New Jersey Motorsports Park with a spirited charge to the podium. Seeking redemption following a frustrating Friday in which he crashed and was penalized during qualifying and only given a single flying lap to claim his grid position, Westby had his work cut out for him in Saturday’s Daytona SportBike race. Unable to improve upon his fourth row grid position in a morning qualifying session that was spoiled by damp conditions, ‘the Wolverine’ systematically carved his way forward in the race. Westby quickly made up a handful of positions and then was reslotted in eighth position for the race’s restart following an early red flag. From there, the Oklahoman put himself in victory contention, slicing through a multi-rider pack to claim the lead. Working away from the big group as part of a three-man dogfight for victory, Westby ultimately finished third, just 0.465 seconds off the victory, aboard his GSX-R600. The result was Westby’s seventh podium of the season and he continues to rank second in the championship chase. He said, “I had a problem yesterday and got a penalty. I had to start from 13th but we’ve won from 12th so we weren’t too worried about it. After the restart we were right up there with the guys, trying to carve through. Everything was going good. I saw at the end we had a little gap — it was just the three of us so we could focus on our battle. “The M4 Suzuki was working really well for me. We were right there at the end and it was a really fun race.” Suzuki SportBikeTrackTime.com’s Elena Myers put forth a determined effort on Saturday as well. Quickly away in third, Myers was a primary player in the scrap for the podium until an off track excursion pushed her down the order. She came home in eighth after earlier showing the potential to finish as high as second in the hard-fought race. M4 Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich capped a fine day for Team Hammer with an encouraging ride in which he missed a top-ten result in the premier AMA Superbike class by just over a tenth of a second. Westby, Myers, and Ulrich will be back at it on Sunday in an attempt to improve on an already outstanding Saturday effort. I didn’t really do a very good job in qualifying 1 so our plan today was to get out by our self and get clear track so I could do my own thing. I got into 3rd and the pace wasn’t very fast I was pretty calm and decided to try and conserve my tire. I was pretty strong on the brakes into turn 1 and that is where I planned on making my pass but I just didn’t have the hp to get next to him on the straight away. In the last four laps I just lost a little grip and not having any proper electronics or any traction control may have hurt me a little in the last few laps. All and all it was my best superbike finish ever for me. I’m pretty happy my bike( the old girl) did well for me today I really need to thank K&L Supply and Riders Discount for making these last few rounds a possibility.
