Veteran Jason DiSalvo hit the track running with his new team and new motorcycles during Friday’s opening AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike practice at New Jersey Motorsports Park. In spite of riding brand-new machines, built by a different team and working with different mechanics, DiSalvo posted the second-best time in the session, a 1:24.718, just off the 1:24.392 of session and Championship leader Martin Cardenas. While DiSalvo is officially entered under the Team Latus Motors Racing banner and his motorcycle appears to be the same Triumph Daytona 675R he has ridden all season, he is pitting out of a different garage than the rest of the Team Latus Motors Racing group and he is actually riding completely new Triumphs built by Fast Company’s Scott Miller and tuned by Roland Riedmann’s Sturgess Cycle Triumph team. “One of the things you’ll notice with the bike,” DiSalvo told Roadracingworld.com Friday, “while they look the same we have new parts on there and they are new bikes. But one of the cool things with building these racebikes is we looked at what pieces were the best components and put everything together to make the best racebike we could.” DiSalvo would not talk about why he essentially switched teams mid-season, but sources close to DiSalvo speaking on condition of anonymity pointed to the five mechanical DNFs he suffered during races this season, including when he brakes failed at the end of the back straightaway during Daytona SportBike Race One at Mid-Ohio.
