OMRRA’s hosts Vintage Days at Portland International Raceway 

Vintage racers showed up in droves to Portland International Raceway to test machines time has not forgotten. The high speed circuit combined with blistering heat tested the vintage grids. Dave Roper, the first American to win an Isle of Man TT, brought his rich motorcycling experience to OMRRA. Roper suffered multiple mechanical DNF’s but would rally and take the podium in Ultralightweight Superbike on Sunday. Portland-based Eirik Nielsen returned home from the AHRMA series to lead the vintage racers in wins on Saturday in the 250 Vintage and 500 Vintage series. Nielsen was pushed to the front by AHRMA champion Jon Munns who shadowed Nielsen in Saturday’s races. 

Since the OMRRA weekend was a one-off race for Nielsen and Munns, current Bridge City Cycles Vintage Championship leader Cody Wood’s position was not threatened by their finishing positions. Wood’s third place finishes on Saturday helped him extend his lead over vintage regulars in the Vintage Championship. With Nielsen and Munns not contesting Sunday’s races, Wood was able to collect two wins in 250 Vintage and 500 Vintage further extending his lead. Patrick Leyshock was absent for Saturday’s races but with two 2nd place finishes in 250 Vintage and 500 Vintage on Sunday, Leyshock holds onto 2nd position in the vintage championship. Entering the weekend, Daric Cheshire was one point ahead of Scott Elder for third position in the championship. With double the vintage races on tap, Cheshire was able to extend his lead with Elder suffering mechanical difficulties throughout the weekend. Elder will need to bring his A-game and finish the remaining events to challenge Cheshire. 

In the 2-Fast Track Days Formula Ultra Championship, Alan Schmidt of Kamloops, B.C., came one step closer to securing his ninth consecutive #1 plate with OMRRA to become the winningest champion in club history. Schmidt demonstrated he has the field in check by easily winning both Formula Ultra races. The battle to watch has been for second in the Formula Ultra Championship with Kevin Pinkstaff (#21) and Sam Verderico (#2) going toe-to-toe all season. In both Saturday and Sunday’s Formula Ultra race, Pinkstaff and Verderico fought for the 2nd position with multiple passes lap after lap. Ultimately, Pinkstaff edged out Verderico by less than a half a second in both Saturday’s and Sunday’s race. The 2nd place finishes by Pinkstaff extend his lead over Verderico in the Formula Ultra Championship chase by 11 points. 

Championship points leader Schmidt has an opportunity to clinch his ninth championship at the next round on September 15th and 16th. 

In KFG Racing/Pirelli-sponsored Clubman Championship news, Huntley Nash brought his AMA Daytona Sportbike team to Portland International Raceway to test a high speed circuit in preparation for NOLA later this year. Nash exhibited lap record speed as he towed the local boys around the track gaining valuable testing knowledge on Saturday. While able to cross the line first in Saturday’s 600 Supersport and 750 Supersport races at record setting pace, Nash’s Daytona Sportbike prepared machine was not compliant to OMRRA’s supersport regulations and was disqualified. Due to Nash’s disqualification, Ryan Sutton secured two victories in 600 Supersport and 750 Supersport. Nash returned on Sunday and officially scored two first place wins in 600 Superbike and 750 Superbike. 

 Nash’s presence inspired OMRRA regulars Ryan Sutton and Andy DiBrino into personal bests with Sutton capturing a lap record in 600 Superbike. Sutton continues to lead the Clubman Championship by an ever-increasing margin over 2nd place Matt Presting. Andy DiBrino, who missed last round due to a broken hand, came back with a vengeance and placed 2nd in 600 Supersport, 750 Supersport and 750 Superbike. With DiBrino off of injured reserve and surging late in the season, his presence is likely to shake up the standings. Sam Verderico continues to score well with top five finishes and has put himself just two points behind Presting who is struggling to retain second place position in the Clubman Championship with mixed results. 

Devon McDonough returned home to PIR while on break from AMA Supersport competition this summer. McDonough had a mechanical issue which kept him from his usual pace but managed to bring his Yamaha R6 home in third in Saturday’s 600 Supersport race. On Sunday, McDonough had the opportunity to test and race an RSRacecraft prepared Triumph 675R. With limited saddle time, McDonough was able to take a 3rd and 5th in 600 Superbike and 750 Superbike. 

In other KFG Racing/Pirelli Clubman Championship news, the Suzuki SV650 of Jason Harper continues to dominate the middleweight classes. Harper has chalked up 15 of 20 wins this year and hasn’t finished worse than 2nd. Jason’s consistency has vaulted him to fourth position in the Clubman Championship. This past weekend, Harper scored a hat trick with 3 wins in 650 GP Twins, 450 Superbike and Middleweight Supersport just missing out on taking the fourth win in Middleweight Superbike to Michael Caravatta on an two-stroke Aprilia 125RS. 

The Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association (OMRRA) developed the two-race per weekend Formula Ultra Championship, the ‘your best two classes’ Clubman Championship and the two-race per day, Olympic-scored Vintage Championship, promoting safe, competitive road racing in all categories. OMRRA, incorporated in 1972 as a non-profit, volunteer run organization, has members ranging in age from 12 to over 70, racing motorcycles of many brands, sizes and ages.
