Former racer Roger Lyle, now the owner and operator of Motorcycle Xcitement Track Days and the Motorcycle Xcitement road racing school, wants to make sure that the memory of “Airborne Al” Wilcox stays alive. To do so, Lyle is donating another $500 in Wilcox’s name to the Roadracing World Action Fund to pay for the deployment of soft barriers at circuits around the United States, and wants other racers to donate in Wilcox’s name as well. “I’m ponying up another $500, and I challenge every racer out there to donate in memory of a great man, a man who spent 70 years of his life at the races, helping out in every way that he could,” Lyle says. Wilcox died February 3, 2011, at the age of 92. Wilcox rode for the factory Harley-Davidson team from 1948 through 1951, and was known as “The Trenton Flash.” Wilcox started more than 3000 that’s three-freaking-thousand races at more than 360 tracks in the U.S. and Canada and racked up hundreds of wins, according to the Motorcycle Xcitement website. After he retired from racing, Wilcox continued to support the sport he loved by serving as the race starter for WERA and AMA Pro events and as a flagger for Motorcycle Xcitement, where he remained the official starter, Lyle says. Wilcox has been nominated for induction into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame this year. After Wilcox’ death, Lyle’s organization donated $1000 to the Roadracing World Action Fund, and others contributed in Wilcox’ name as well. Lyle wants the donations to keep coming, and his latest donation to the fund is his way of keeping the safety of road racers at the top of every sport rider’s list of priorities.
