Szoke wins Superbike thriller at St-Eustache ST-EUSTACHE, Que. (July 8, 2012) Brantford, Ont.’s Jordan Szoke took over the lead of the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship title chase with a dramatic victory in round two of the series at Autodrome St-Eustache on Sunday. Riding the Waznie Racing / Parts Canada / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR, the seven-time Superbike champion grabbed the lead from Alex Welsh on lap 20 of the 22-lap race and hung on to score a 1.995-sec. victory. Welsh settled for second on the AW7R / Kenwood Electronics Canada Suzuki GSX-R1000 and early race leader Kevin Lacombe placed third aboard the Team Couturier Racing BMW S1000RR. “We were fast all weekend long and the bike was fantastic,” said Szoke, who started from pole position but had to work his way up from third on the opening lap. “I had such a good race with Alex. It was a lot of fun.” The win put Szoke into the lead of the Mopar Canadian Superbike standings with 97 points after two of six races. Opening round winner Andrew Nelson is second with 86 points after finishing fifth on Sunday on his Nelson Racing / Endras Motorrad / mcn.tv BMW S1000RR. Lacombe led the first five laps of the race before Szoke took over on lap six. Szoke maintained the top spot with Welsh, who passed Lacombe on lap seven, close behind until lap 17, when the Suzuki rider snuck past entering turn seven. Szoke finally made the decisive move at the end of the backstraight and then took advantage of lapped traffic to get a bit of breathing room in the final few laps. “I didn’t get the best of starts but I tried to calmly work my way up to the lead,” Szoke explained. “I put my head down and thought I could get a gap to Alex but he stuck with me. After he got past me I wanted to try and pass him back right away, and I was getting better drive onto the backstraight.” Szoke received the KICKER Kick Ass Pass of the Race Award for his decisive move for the lead. The prize includes an iK501 iPhone / iPod Dock valued at $300. Welsh was looking for his first career national Superbike win and the Uxbridge, Ont. rider set the fastest lap of the race on the eighth tour at 45.413 secs. “It was good to get up there and run with Jordan,” said Welsh, who is now third in the Superbike standings with 75 points. “I don’t think I’ve done that in a while. Once Jordan got by me he got past a lapper in the bowl [turn seven] and then got past another one in turn one and it was tight for me. After that I knew I didn’t have much chance.” After leading the early laps Lacombe couldn’t keep pace with Szoke and Welsh and the St-Cesaire, Que. rider settled for a lonely third place. “We weren’t off the pace by much but I was still having a hard time in the tight stuff,” said Lacombe, who is making his return to racing this season after a two-year layoff. “We’re improving every weekend and I’m getting more comfortable.” Jodi Christie of Keene, Ont. finished an impressive fourth on the Jodi Christie Racing / Accelerated Technologies Honda CBR600RR. Christie made an excellent start from seventh on the grid and was able to tag onto the lead trio of Lacombe, Szoke and Welsh for the first few laps. After qualifying on the front row Nelson made a poor getaway and was sixth at the end of the first lap. He wasn’t able to work his way around the Team Dumas Superbike / Boulangeriedumas.com BMW S1000RR of Francois Dumas until lap six, and he was unable to make up enough ground to Christie to challenge for fourth. Bodhi Edie of Warman, Sask. took sixth on the Edie Racing / Blue Streak Racing / Fast Company BMW S1000RR and Matt McBride finished seventh aboard his Riders Choice BMW S1000RR. After his early run in fifth St-Raymond, Que.’s Dumas faded to eighth at the finish and Sebastien Tremblay of Longueuil, Que. ran ninth all the way on the MotoNation BMW S1000RR. Christie now leads the Pro Sport Bike standings with 104 points to the 98 of Trombino. Steve Crevier claimed his second straight win in the Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada XR1200 Cup at Autodrome St-Eustache. The defending series champion, riding the MotoSport Plus / Dominion Lending-backed entry, took the lead on lap two after John Ross MacRae fell in turn one and rode to a 3.194-sec. victory over Michael Taylor’s Mackie Harley-Davidson backed bike. MacRae’s Ruthless Racing / Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada teammate Darren James of Deep Cove, B.C. finished third after a great battle with Taylor. Calgary racer MacRae was unhurt in his fall. Opening round winner Trevor Daley of Mississauga, Ont. finished third aboard his One Speed / Riders Choice Suzuki GSX-R1000. With his win Hamel picked up the DUA Motorsports $1000 contingency payback and a prize pack from Mopar. Daley now leads Hamel by just three points in the Amateur Superbike standings, 93-90.
