FLETCHER AND SOINE HOLD ON TO POINTS LEADS DURING CENTRAL ROADRACING ASSOCIATION’S ROUND 2 WEEKEND
Round two of the Central Roadracing Association’s (CRA) season was held over June 16-17. The club ran Brainerd International Raceway’s 13 turn 2.5 mile Competition Course, and the weekend featured 37 sprint races in a “dual-sprint” schedule format. The weekend provided plenty of close battles on track, and an on-track practice landing, loading, and tour of the North Memorial Air Lift rescue helicopter.
Entering the weekend with the Expert class points lead, Shane Fletcher took advantage of the dual sprint format by entering 18 races. “Running 18 sprints in 2 days on the same machine takes planning, organization and a little luck to get thru it like we did. It is exhausting mentally as well as physically but rewarding in the end. I really felt comfortable with the R6 this past weekend and plan to have a little more for the July CRA event, thanks to Robert Jensen of Spiegler USA.” The hard work paid off, as Fletcher took 14 podiums and 9 wins in the Middleweight, Heavyweight, and Unlimited classes, racing his YZF R6 against other 600’s, 750’s, and liter bikes.
The Unlimited class saw Tony Kasper take four wins in the Superbike and GP categories, while Shane Keaveny took the two Supersport wins. The two veterans battled at the front of the Unlimited pack all weekend. Keaveny also took his Ducati 848 middleweight contender for it’s maiden ride, and he quickly came to grips with the machine taking a second place finish in a Middleweight Supersport sprint. Fifteen year old expert racer Kaleb DeKeyrel continued to impress in his first full season on a 600, as he won two sprints in the Heavyweight class on his Yamaha YZF R6.
In the Novice class, points leader Brandon Soine won 12 of the 18 races he ran, logging time in the Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Ultralight grids on his Honda CRF 450 and Suzuki GSXR600. Soine’s run of race wins was spoiled by Jordan Imrie, who dominated every Novice Middleweight race on his Ducati 848.
The expert lightweight class saw attrition at the front of the pack, as podium regulars Eric Fox and Cole Naymark’s weekends were cut short due to accidents. Brent Bixby and Kyle Knutson finished the weekend with 3 and 2 lightweight wins respectively, and Jonathan Champ took Sunday’s Lightweight GP win in his first race weekend as an expert. Chris Knauf and Kyle Dahl dominated the novice lightweight and supertwin races on their Kawasaki EX650’s.
As Brainerd’s competition course bypasses the long front straight with a tight infield section, dirt bikes were lured out of hibernation. Anthony Myhre and Brandon Soine took wins in the Expert and Novice Ultralight classes aboard their 450cc machines, and Geoffrey Egerman took a Ultralight win on his Ducati 620. The Ninja 250 class provided plenty of bar to bar action, with experts Mark Dargis, Bryant Soberg, and Brad Zajic and novices Sam Miller, Chris Knauf, and Brian Lachmiller battling for spec class wins throughout the weekend’s 6 races.
The Central Roadracing Association will host its next race event on July 7-8 on Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course. The weekend will be another dual sprint format, promising plenty of racing action. The track will also be hosting a car show/drag racing event over the race weekend.
