Pikes Peak International Raceway, a former AMA venue, provided excellent racing and close results for the second round of MRA competition in 2012
Mixed weather on Saturday caused a short rain delay as a squall made its way past the event in the early afternoon, but this did not damp the spirits of the competitors or the spectators. In Novice GTU Joseph Washburn put in an impressive performance passing Matt Diehl for the lead in the middle of the race and holding that position lead until the finish, despite pressure from Diehl.
Close competition was the order of the weekend. Nikolas Lenski and David Mobley displayed skill and precision in their battles during the Amateur races with Mobley prevailing in the Amateur GTU race and Lenski making a pass for the win on the final lap of the Amateur GTO race.
The close competition continued in the Race of the Rockies, where a three-way battle for the lead persisted through the entire 20 lap race. Doug Kahl, Mike Applegate and Dan Turner engaged in close quarter battles changing positions multiple time, with Turner eventually finding a way past the other two and taking the win!
Shannon Moham chalked up up 5 more race wins this round, including Race of the Rockies GTU, to lead the Clubman Championship by 164 points.
