Cameron got the holeshot on his #6 Yamaha YZF-R6® in both legs of the red-flag-interrupted race and remained in the top three throughout the entirety of the contest. “I felt really good off both starts,” Cameron said, “and I got in a rhythm. My knee started to tense up a little bit, and I fell off the pace some as the race wore on. My R6 was really fast today, and my crew did a great job. We’ll come back tomorrow to improve our position in Race 2.” Cameron’s Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha Daytona SportBike teammate Tommy Hayden also got a great start in the first leg of the race, but he was unable to duplicate his effort on the re-start. Tommy put his head down nonetheless and started moving closer to the front in the early laps of the race until he got up to sixth place. Unfortunately, he couldn’t move into the top five on the day, but he still earned valuable points, and he remains in third place in the DSB season standings. (May 5) — Following a pitched back-and-forth battle for the lead throughout Saturday’s 50-mile race at Infineon Raceway, Martin Cardenas managed to collect his third victory in a row in the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike class aboard his powerful GEICO Suzuki GSX-R600. Cardenas and rival Jason DiSalvo swapped the lead multiple times during the 22-lap race around the 2.32-mile, 11-turn road course. But it was Cardenas pouring it on in the end, taking a 1.460-second victory over DiSalvo in the first of two GoPro Daytona SportBike races scheduled for this weekend’s Great Clips West Coast Moto Jam. “Today was a pretty tough race but it was good for me,” Cardenas said. “Cameron (Beaubier) and Jason were very fast. I made a good start, got the third position, and made my way up to the front from there. “DiSalvo and I exchanged positions many times throughout the race. I was able to push hard and get past him for the lead towards the end and I kept a decent gap between us from there. My last few lap times were fast, which helped me keep the lead.” This was Cardenas’ 20th career AMA Pro victory and 19th in the Daytona SportBike class. His win total represents the AMA record for all-time SportBike wins. The win pads Cardenas’ championship lead to 33 points over Dane Westby. “It’s a good result,” Cardenas said, “although I think we are all very tired from this race. The track was very physical and demanding. Towards the end I was definitely feeling tired and sore in my hands. More, from a press release issued by Team Hammer: FOURTH PLACE WESTBY SOLID ONCE AGAIN FOR M4 SUZUKI Team M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby collected another strong top-five finish to further solidify his status as a serious AMA Pro Daytona SportBike title contender on Saturday at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA. Westby’s recent efforts to improve his starts paid off, as he immediately slotted his GSX-R600 with the lead group from his seventh position spot on the second row. Westby made a move to claim fourth and promptly turned his attention to defending the position as the top three had already broken free at the front. The Oklahoma native was unflappable under heavy pressure and quickly counterattacked an attempt to steal fourth away from him two laps from the end. The fourth place result combined with his earlier second, third, and fifth see Westby currently ranked second in the Daytona SportBike title fight on 80 points. “I’ve been working on the start after Atlanta and it went all right. I got off the line on the restart pretty well but I had to follow the lines of the riders in front of me. The guys up front got away so I ended up trying to hold onto fourth and protect the position. On the second to last lap a move was made but I got him right back. “It was a good result for the points. Myers qualified 14th among the 54-deep field around the physically demanding circuit. In the race she moved up as high as eighth before ultimately settling down in 13th at her home circuit where she famously claimed a historic victory two years ago. Team Venezuela’s Robertino Pietri and M4 Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich flew in formation for much of the day’s 22-lap AMA Pro Superbike contest. The two qualified in 13th (Pietri) and 15th (Ulrich) and raced together deep into the contest. And advancing rider split the two black, red, and white GSX-R1000s with ‘Tino crossing the line in 11th and Ulrich 13th on the final lap. Westby, Myers, Pietri, and Ulrich will be back in action and looking to improve on their Saturday showings in Sunday’s second half of the Infineon Raceway AMA Pro doubleheader. Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki rider Jake Lewis was able to capture a podium position in the AMA Pro Road Racing SuperSport race 1 during the Great Clips West Coast Moto Jam at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma Ca. In the GoPro Daytona Sportbike class both Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki riders were able to finish better than their qualifying positions with Cory West bringing his Suzuki GSX-R 600 home in 6th place and Benny Solis finishing in 13th. This was Jakes first visit to this difficult Northern California racetrack and he made progress every time he was out on the track with his fastest qualifying lap being his final lap this morning at a 1:42.7 which was good for 6th place on the second row of the grid. On a restart from an early red flag, Jake was able to get off the line and was in 3rd at the end of the first lap. Jake was able to run with the leaders and had the fastest lap of the race at a 1:41.1, which is an improvement of 1.6 seconds over his qualifying time. Jake finished the race in 3rd place within a second of the leaders and with over 15 seconds on 4th place. Jake retains his lead in the East Coast SuperSport championship, as this event is a West Coast SuperSport championship round. After difficult qualifying sessions, which saw both of the team’s Daytona SportBike class riders end up outside of the top 10 with Cory West in 11th on the 3rd row of the grid and Benny Solis 14th on the 4th row, both competitors were able to advance and finish Race 1 better then they qualified. Cory finished in 6th after battling to keep several competitors behind him at the end and Benny finished up in 13th place. In the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike 2012 Rider Point Standings, Cory remains in 10th place and Benny is 18th. More, from a press release issued by LTD Racing: NASH AND GAVIRIA CHALLENGED, SHOW HEART AT INFINEON RACEWAY Sonoma, CA (May 5, 2012) LTD Racing teammates Huntley Nash and David Gaviria faced a number of challenges in this weekend’s AMA Pro Daytona SportBike race but the duo managed to fight hard at Infineon Raceway and show the racer’s spirit inside them. Nash, after running inside the top ten in the Road Atlanta sessions and having his best weekend in the Daytona SportBike class last time out, knew he’d have a tougher time at one of his least favorite tracks. The Georgian persevered and was able to rally and earn a top 15 in Saturday’s race, improving two positions off his qualifying spot. “I settled in and tried to get some laps and take advantage of the track time,” said Nash. “Every little bit counts when you’re a young rider learning. I was able to do my best lap towards the end and make up a spot. We got some points and some seat time. Our goal is to make some changes for the morning warm-up and try to keep going forward. I figured out a few things.” David Gaviria’s weekend was one of the strangest on record. Last year’s SuperSport West champion ended up taking a provisional start after mechanical issues and a crash left him with very little track time in DSB practice and qualifying. “It was like a nightmare,” said David of his bad luck. “It’s the first time I have had this kind of weekend before. Sometimes everything goes wrong and sometimes everything goes well. You have to be positive all the time. If you are not positive, it only gets worse.” A first lap crash left David and the team scrambling during the red flag to get his machine repaired. David was able to rejoin the race then complete the 22 laps to finish the contest. “I thought this cannot be happening. After the crash, I tried to see if anyone was hurt and then I picked my bike up and tried to get it back to the pits,” said Gaviria. “The bike was pretty bad but I made it back. The team did a good job reconstructing the bike. I appreciate the job all the guys did and I’m grateful to the Pegram Racing team for helping us. After the racing started, I was the last rider so I tried to learn the track, the braking zones. I felt I could go faster but I told myself I needed to relax and ride. I will try some changes in the morning.” Huntley and David get one more shot at Infineon Raceway on Sunday.
