Road Atlanta Memories And Photos: Watching Eddie Lawson And Gene Romero Test In The 1980s

FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: Here are a couple of keepers I took at Turn Three back circa 1980. I was still in high school at the time, but my dad had been taking me to Road Atlanta since the very first events when the track was still new. The photos of Eddie Lawson on the KZ1000 and Gene Romero on the TZ750 were taken on the same day from Turn Three. Both bikes have a sticker saying “Test Day.” I believe this was the Friday before the race weekend. I remember being amazed at the mighty TZ750s doing power wheelies out of Turn Five and thinking how awesome it would feel. Many years later I was coming out of Turn Five and doing the same power wheelies on my 1986 GSXR-1100…and it felt as cool and awesome as I had imagined. Great magazine! Thanks, C.
