FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: My Road Atlanta memory comes from the 1998 Big Kahuna National (the original Superbike double-header weekend). I lived in SC at the time, and my dad and I decided to make the trip to see the races that year — we’d been racing fans for a while, but had never gone to an actual race weekend before. We tried a number of different locations around the track for good photos, but settled on the turns above the esses for the Superbike races. The attached image is from a bit more than 1/2 way through one of the two races, with Ben Bostrom hounding Gobert for the lead and Miguel lurking in third, hoping to pick up the pieces… I love this shot because it captures a great battle for the lead, shows a truly distinctive part of the track, and even throws in the Confederate flag in the background to remind us of where we were that day! As I recall, this race ended with Miguel putting “The Pass” on Gobert going down the (old) final hill turn for the win — Bostrom might have also crashed after running just off the track on the final straight after passing the checkered flag (?). This was before Jumbotron screens, so the only way we knew what Miguel had done was by the screams from the fans along the front straight, and then some sort of crazy celebration as he came up the hill after the flag. FYI, we’re not going to be down there for the races, so don’t worry about any tickets for me… I’ll just be happy if I can share the photo with other readers! Thanks!
