Jason DiSalvo, riding his Latus Motors Racing Triumph Daytona 675R in Gary Nixon Tribute livery, topped the first practice session for the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike class Thursday at Daytona International Speedway. DiSalvo covered the 3.5-mile infield road course in 1:50.499, which was faster than the 1:51.445 he turned in the first practice session in 2011 and faster than his qualifying time from last year, 1:50.070. “So far, so good,” said DiSalvo, the defending Daytona 200 Champion. “The bike was working good right out of the box chassis-wise. I’d love to be able to get out and run that race pace all weekend.” The session was interrupted by two red flags. The second red flag was brought out by a bad crash involving Y.E.S. Graves Yamaha’s 16-year-old Garrett Gerloff. Gerloff ran wide at Turn One, and as he attempted to ride across a painted white line separating the paved run-off area and the course, he highsided violently. When Gerloff landed he did not attempt to get up and instead signaled for help. He was transported directly to Halifax Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with a broken right femur, according to a team representative. Reese Wacker (Yamaha YZF-R6), 2:03.530 More, from a press release issued by Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A.: Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha Ride Garrett Gerloff Fractures Leg In Practice For Daytona 200 Daytona, FL – March 15, 2012 16-year-old Daytona SportBike competitor, Garrett Gerloff, who rides a Yamaha YZF-R6® for the Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha team, suffered an unfortunate injury in the closing minutes of the first practice session for the 2012 Daytona 200. Garrett momentarily lost traction and high-sided from his R6. The practice session was immediately red-flagged to a stop, and Garrett was quickly transported to nearby Halifax Health Medical Center of Daytona Beach where he was diagnosed with a fracture of his right femur. According to Chuck Graves of Graves Motorsports, “Garrett was on the gas, in the top 10 on laptimes, and moving up when the incident occurred. Garrett was awake and alert throughout the ordeal, and he’s in good spirits despite what is an obvious setback. Our thoughts are with Garrett and his family, and we wish him a speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing him back aboard his Number 8 Yamaha R6 as soon as he is able.” Belying his young age, Garrett is an experienced road racer, with many laps under his belt. In his AMA Pro Racing debut at New Jersey Motorsports Park last September, Garrett won his first-ever professional race in Saturday’s SuperSport race at NJMP. About Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A.
