Sean Dwyer won the Unlimited Grand Prix during CCS Florida’s season-opener February 12 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 after nabbing an early lead with the rest of the pack shuffling behind to catch up. Huntley Nash got the holeshot on his Yamaha YZF-R6, but Dwyer was in hot pursuit, overtook Nash in Turn Three and started to open a gap on the field.

Behind Dwyer, Kawasaki ZX-10R riders and teammates Felipe MacLean and Jeff Lampe were working their way up front and battling each other for second place. Towards the end of the race, Lampe had maneuvered around his teammate and into second place and began to close the gap on Dwyer. Dwyer maintained his lead to the checkered flag and won. Lampe was the runner-up, MacLean got third, Bruno Silva was fourth, and Nash rounded off the top five finishers.

“It was a great race! I did everything I could to put the bike here”¦ to put the two Kawasakis on the podium,” MacLean said on the podium. He went on to thank his teammate, Lampe, for putting the bike together, stating, “It’s such an honor to work with him. He’s such a good, organized, and devoted racer. Having him as a teammate is something I guess every rider would want.”

Lampe complimented Dwyer, stating, “Sean did what he had to do. That’s why the guy’s always up here on the top of the podium. He’s a very smart rider and a good rider. I’m just honored to stand next to him and bring my Kissimmee Motorsports Kawasaki back on the podium. Two Kawi’s on the podium: When’s the last time you saw that?”

“Jeff [Lampe] is a hard charger,” said Dwyer. “He can ride his butt off, and he isn’t going to give up, and he’s got a lot of heart. He didn’t have the greatest grid position, and my plan was to take off and chill the last few laps. I started to do that a little bit too early, and I turned around and he was there all of a sudden. And, I thought, ‘Holy Cow! Now we’ve got a race!’ That was a blast, I didn’t take him too lightly.

“Last year was kind of a struggle,” Dwyer continued. “So, we’re going to step it up this year and really make it hard for these guys. I know they’re going to come with it!”

Dwyer also won the Unlimited Superbike race earlier in the day, finishing ahead of Silva and Lampe, and finished fourth in the GTO race, behind Villa, Lampe, Silva, and MacLean.

Villa was later injured in the Unlimited Supersport race while battling with MacLean and fighting to regain his early lead. With just a little over a lap to go, Villa crashed at the entrance to the front straight, causing a red flag. MacLean was awarded the victory. Villa sustained a broken femur and pelvis. He was airlifted to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgical repair.

Eric Wood was the biggest winner of the weekend with three first-place finishes. Wood nailed early leads and dominated the GTU, Middleweight Superbike, and Middleweight Grand Prix races on his Ducati 848.
