Colombian racer Santiago Villa, 36, suffered a broken left femur and fractures to his pelvis when he crashed during the CCS Unlimited Supersport race Sunday, February 12 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Villa had just passed Felipe MacLean to take the lead of the race when his Prieto Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000 lost rear traction coming out of the final corner and onto the front straightaway. Villa’s motorcycle regained traction abruptly and then launched him high into the air, according to CCS Florida boss Henry DeGouw. Villa landed heavily on the track and may have also been struck by his motorcycle. Villa was flown via helicopter to Kendall Regional Medical Center, in Miami, Florida. He was diagnosed with fractures to the left side of his pelvis and the upper end of his left femur was broken off, according to Dunlop/Race Tire Service’s Steve Brubaker, who has been at Villa’s bedside since Sunday evening. “He’s in surgery now,” Brubaker told Roadracingworld.com Monday morning. “The surgeon basically said, ‘We can do a hip replacement, and you will not race again. And also you’re too young for a hip replacement.’ So he didn’t recommend that. So he’s going to screw it all back together and get it to heal right, and he’s saying three to four months of being very good to it so it heals properly, no racing. The doctor feels it will be successful.” Villa is a multi-time Colombian National Champion, and in 2011 he won two CCS National Championships, two CCS regional Championships and several class Championships. He had planned to compete in the 2012 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Championship on a Prieto Performance-backed Yamaha YZF-R6.
