SONOMA, Calif. (Jan. 10, 2012) Engines were replaced by marching feet on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Infineon Raceway as more than 400 people turned out for the first “John’s March Against Gastric Cancer” fundraiser. The event was held in honor of John Cardinale, a long-time employee at Infineon Raceway who was diagnosed with gastric cancer in February, 2011. Cardinale led the march of 425 people around the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course at the event, which generated $15,000. All funds will go to the Gastric Cancer Fund (www.gastriccancer.org). “I was deeply honored that so many people came out for this event,” said Cardinale, vice president of marketing and communications at Infineon Raceway. “We not only raised quite a bit of money for gastric cancer research but I believe we really raised awareness to this terrible disease. I can’t wait for next year’s event.” Participants in the march ranged from competitive runners to families, including children on bikes and strollers, and even a few four-legged friends. “This cause is so close to my heart, and it’s amazing to have a great event to support this need,” said Novato’s Judy Riccio, who lost her husband John to gastric cancer in 2008. “When I lost my husband, they didn’t know much about this disease, but it’s amazing what progress they’ve made in three years. It felt good to be here today, and I felt that every step I was taking was getting us closer to a cure. It gives me hope.” The Gastric Cancer Fund is the first organization dedicated to helping fight gastric (stomach) cancer. Although gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, it is one of the most underfunded forms of cancer research. Through education, research, support and advocacy, the organization is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by gastric cancer. “I’m really honored to be here and to be associated with this event,” said JP Gallagher, founder and chairman of the board of the Gastric Cancer Fund. “I’m grateful to John and everyone at Infineon Raceway for all they’ve done not only for John, but for Gastric Cancer research and for our organization. Without their support we wouldn’t be able to do what we’re doing today, so I’m incredibly grateful and inspired and really honored to be here.” Each participant received a T-shirt and enjoyed light refreshments, provided by Levy Restaurants, following the march.
