Santiago Villa, an AMA Pro racer in the Daytona SportBike class and a multi-time, multi-region CCS Champion, was seriously injured in a crash while riding his streetbike January 4 in Bogota, Colombia. “I was going home from my dealership at the end of the day,” Villa wrote in an e-mail to Roadracingworld.com. “I was riding my 2010 Yamaha R1. I ride it or my scooter every day. I went to change lanes, and there was oil or something in the road. I open the throttle and just had no grip at all. The bike highside me, and I landed on the sidewalk, on the curb. “It was stupid. I still can’t believe this crash. In 15 years I have never crashed on the street, and the traffic in Bogota is crazy like New York City. But I don’t race or go fast on the street. I just have fun riding to work.” Villa reported that he was wearing Heroic gloves and an Arai helmet, which both did their jobs, but he still suffered a fractured pelvis, left foot, left wrist and left big toe. None of the bone fractures will require surgery to heal, he wrote. Villa is due to be released from Santa Fe Hospital on Thursday and plans to begin the defense of his CCS Florida number one plate February 10-11 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
