Andrews, Kelsey Each Win Three CMRA Sprint Races At Eagles Canyon Raceway

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association returned to Eagles Canyon Raceway for the final of three race weekends at the Decatur, Texas establishment. Boasting 11 turns, spread out over 2.5 miles, the course is home track to many of the CMRA’s northern members. Known for its high speed straights, double apexes, and elevation changes, the track can be quite a demanding mistress and favors big bore bikes. Thankfully, the heat wave that plagued the State for much of the summer passed prior to the event, leaving relatively perfect racing weather. Clear skies, balmy temperatures and the second-to-last event of the season could mean only one thing tight racing as folks battled for crucial championship points.

Shogun’s Brooks Gremmels’ generous cash purse brought all the usual suspects to the 6-Hour Big Bike Endurance race. Eighteen teams left the grid in an all out war to obtain a portion of the pot. While a few would ultimately suffer mechanical problems during the event, none drew the dreaded Red Flag. All in all, it was six hours of crash-free racing at its finest between some of the fastest teams in the country.

John Hutchinson’s KTM RC8, proudly operated by team Quadwealth/SCRC (Ty Howard, Bryan West, Jeremy Louder, Derek Wagnon) took the lead early on and never looked back. Quadwealth’s lead rider was a full two seconds faster than the rest of the field, a distinction maintained throughout the race. Ultimately posting a race-best lap time of 1:50:092, Quadwealth finished five full laps ahead of second place. Said one competitor, “They [Quadwealth] started fast and only got faster!” The Yamaha R6 mounted Village Idiots (John Orchard, Chris Headley, Brandon Cleland, Blake Cochran) decisively finished second, three laps ahead of third place, Team Ridesmart (Dirk Anderson, Brandt Dillon, William Guthrie, James Caraballo, John Willenborg).

The CMRA Sprint races produced some of the best battles of the year as racers fought for critical championship points. In the Expert divisions, Danny Kelsey locked up the A Superstock championship, a tribute to his outstanding performances over the season. Similarly, James Camacho Jr. locked up the 125GP championship, while John Orchard captured the Formula 40 Heavyweight division.

CMRA legend Ty Howard posted the weekend’s best lap time of 1:46:926 en route to a win in the A Superbike race. Howard holds the current lap record at Eagles Canyon, set back in 2010 at 1:45:648. Shod on Pirellis, Howard finished six full seconds ahead of second place. Howard’s win was sweeter than normal, given that his challenge for a podium finish in the A Supersport race was cut short when Bill Guthrie illegally passed under a waiving yellow flag. Frustrated by the move, Howard rushed a pass in the following corner, but was forced off track when Guthrie’s line converged with his own. Howard managed to salvage 4th, but handed the podium finishes to Danny Kelsey, Bill Guthrie, and Brandt Dillon, respectively.

Derek Wagnon had yet another outstanding weekend on his RaceworX-tuned Suzuki GSX-R600. Battling severe tire issues, Wagnon handily won the C Superstock and B Superstock events, where he remains a heavy favorite in the championship point standings. Batting nearly a thousand at this point, this kid continues to impress as he wins, race after race. Said one observer, “I love watching him [Wagnon] and that youngster, [Hayden] Schultz, race, because you know the sky is the limit” in terms of potential.

In the Novice divisions, Rune Medhus, Ryan Max Johnson, and Jose Silva locked up several championships. But for each champion, the weekend held surprises. Youngster Eric Williams bested Johnson in the Fastline Motorcycle School D Superbike race with a measured attack that would have done any MotoGP star proud. Rune Medhus, plagued by tires shagged while kicking tail in other races, had what would have been his second win of the day snarfled from within his grasp by upstart Peyton Inge in the Formula 1 race. Inge, who passed perennial favorite Jose Silva three laps previously on the outside of Turn 6, ran his best lap of the season to hang onto the lead, relegating Silva to third. Silva had additional troubles with Craig Thomson, who snagged yet another win in the Lone Star Track Days B Superstock race. One thing is for sure, the final round at Texas World Speedway in October will showcase some excellent racing, because any one of these riders is a threat to win any given race they enter.

The CMRA now heads to Texas World Speedway, in College Station, Texas for the final event of the season, hosted October 21 – 23. Lone Star Track Days will host a track day on October 21, as well as a CMRA-approved New Rider License school. The weekend schedule boasts a 2-Hour Mini Endurance race, as well as a 5-Hour Big Bike Endurance event and a full spectrum of Sprints, both Mini and Big. Gate fees are $15 for the weekend for adults and $10 on Sunday. Kids 12 and under are free! Ride your motorcycle, scooter, or other two wheeled contraption and pay only $5 on Saturday or Sunday. As always, pets are not allowed. See ya there!!
