Santiago HERNANDEZ, Colombia (FTR), 1:42.686 More, from a press release issued by Marc VDS Race Team: POSITIVE PRACTICE FOR MARC VDS AT MISANO The Marc VDS Racing Team got its preparations for this weekend’s Misano Moto2 round off to a positive start today, as Scott Redding finished close to the top six and Mika Kallio showed big potential on the Suter MMXI machine. Redding arrived in Misano full of confidence after equalling his season best result of fifth in Indianapolis just five days ago. And his brilliant resurgence in form continued on the opening day of practice at a scorching hot Misano circuit, located just a short distance from the Adriatic coast. The 18-year-old lapped consistently in the top five during both sessions and 12th place on the combined leaderboard certainly didn’t reflect his true potential. Preferring to work on the set-up of his Suter MMXI machine on worn tyres with track temperature hitting a sizzling 44 degrees, Redding didn’t lap on a new soft tyre in the final stages of the session. As a result, he’s confident that had he opted to use a fresh soft Dunlop rear tyre he would have easily improved his pace of 1.39.412 and been in the hunt for a top five position on the timesheets. Fresh from his morale-boosting ninth position at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Kallio focussed on fine-tuning the set-up of his Suter MMXI to finish in an encouraging 20th place. Kallio was able to evaluate new Ohlins front fork internals today and he was happy with the new developments, and is confident with additional time on track he will be able to improve on his best lap time of 1.40.084. Scott Redding #45 – 1.39.412- 38 laps – 12th position “I am really happy today because I know we can be much faster than 12th position and I really enjoyed both sessions. I felt good this morning even though we were looking for a bit more feeling on the entry and exit of corners. This afternoon we changed the suspension settings and the gearing and the bike felt fantastic. The bike felt like the best it has all year on old tyres and that is a brilliant boost. There is no reason why I can’t be up there for the rest of the weekend because I felt really comfortable on the bike. It was crucial to build on the momentum we gained in Indianapolis and we’ve done that, so hopefully we can be fighting for the podium again on Sunday.” Mika Kallio #36 – 1.45.160 – 35 – laps – 20th position “I hoped I would be a little bit faster and further up the timesheets but it wasn’t a bad day at all. I was running some new internals in the front fork today that didn’t feel a really big difference but it was a little bit better coping with the bumps. I’m still a little bit too slow at the moment but I’m sure we can make some improvements tomorrow. In Indianapolis we raised the bike quite a lot because of the low grip but here there is far too much weight transfer, especially in the braking zone. So we will lower the bike again tomorrow to improve the hard braking, but also we’ll put some more weight on the rear to get a better overall balance.” Michael Bartholemy – Team Manager “Scott has been very fast and consistent today on old tyres and this has given us a lot of encouragement for the rest of the weekend. I think there is no doubt that had we gone for a new soft tyre at the end of the session like everybody else then he could have easily been in the top three with Bradl and Marquez, who are currently the benchmark in Moto2. By using the old soft tyre it meant we kept one back for tomorrow and that is really important because it gives us an extra for qualifying, and this is where we have struggled in the past. Mika has also done a very good job today and he is not that far away from being inside the top 10. As always he was giving his maximum effort to find the best setting on the Suter MMXI machine and we are optimistic he can be quite a bit faster tomorrow. Scott was in the top six and Mika in the top 10 in Indianapolis and based on what we’ve seen today, that has to be our target for Sunday.” More, from a press release issued by QMMF Racing Team: New approach and strategy for Ricky Cardús Al-Naimi in search for best slow-corner set-up QMMF Racing Team riders Ricky Cardús and Mishal Al-Naimi had a busy first day of practice at the San Marino Grand Prix. 23-year-old Cardús, who holds 28th place in the combination of both Friday sessions, is trying a new step-by-step approach with his set-up, sacrificing speed in favor of sound technical knowledge. 27-year-old Al-Naimi, who climbed up one position in the rankings from the morning to the afternoon, tried different set-up solutions for the slower corners of the 4.2 kilometre Misano circuit, where he still struggles with hard-braking and with smooth cornering lines. Rather than chasing quick lap times early on, both riders try to be well prepared when it counts in the qualifying session on Saturday afternoon. Mashel Al-Naimi 38th in 1.42,375 “There are sections of this track that really suit my riding style, like the first part which is fast and flowing without tight corners that require extreme hard- and late-braking. You don’t need as many reference points as on some of the other tracks and I feel comfortable following other riders. It is more difficult for me in the slow corners where I have to brake much harder. I tried several different set-up solutions for these points but in doing so we made the bike worse for the fast and flowing part of the track. We also compared both tyre choices. I was sliding a lot with the harder compound but felt good with the softer one. My aim for tomorrow is to find the best possible set-up and to improve my lap time!” Ricky Cardús 28th in 1.40,358 “Here at Misano, we have a different approach than at the last race in Indianapolis. Over there in the United States last week, we were within the front group on Friday, but by race day, we dropped back in the field. Here in Italy, we started in calm fashion, step by step, with the aim of finding a clear direction on the set-up side that will help us to go faster in qualifying tomorrow and to be competitive in the race. We started well this morning, but this afternoon, when I went out with the other tyre that we hadn’t used yet, I had a silly crash. Luckily there was no serious damage to me or the bike, so I was able continue. But I didn’t improve much in this session and now I am 28th with a gap of a little less than two seconds to the top. It’s obvious that we have to go faster tomorrow. A sunny day welcomed the Moto2 riders in the first two sessions, that gave the first idea as to who will be competitive this weekend. At the end of the day the combined classification sees the German Stefan Bradl lead in first place with 1’38.461, with Marc Marquez following with a gap of 0.441 seconds. Our Alex De Angelis exploited the two sessions to ride as much as possible to find feeling once more with his MotoBI, in a series of laps that tested the tyres’ durability and helped finalize the set-up by comparing data with that collected some weeks ago in private tests. A slight chattering afflicted the front in the morning session, without preventing Alex to take a 1’39.358 lap that gives him the provisional 11th place in the combined classification. In the afternoon the Team worked to find front stability and to test the used tyres to verify race pace, paying less heed to the time on the single lap which has therefore not been improved upon. Alex DeAngelis Today we worked to regain my confidence with my MotoBI. This morning we suffered a little chattering that however was fixed in the afternoon, so this should not be a problem anymore. In the second session we didn’t mount new tyres preferring to test their wear for the race, so to consolidate immediately this variable before dedicating to getting a time on a single lap. For this reason in the afternoon I did not manage to improve this morning’s best lap time. The leader, however, ran very, very fast, so we still have some work to do and then tomorrow, with new tyres, try to improve seriously our time.
