Lap Records Broken During MRA Event At High Plains Raceway

Lap Records Broken During MRA Event At High Plains Raceway

MRA Round 6 was held at High Plains Raceway on August 27 & 28 under very hot conditions. Temps were in the high 90’s beginning with Friday’s track day and continuing through the Saturday and Sunday races, punishing riders’ endurance. But the hot, dry weather brought the track surface into exceptional condition, and nine different class lap records fell over the course of the weekend.

The very first class record to be broken came in the Production 250 Cup, with Tracy Schram laying down a 2:08 on his Ninja 250. Schram’s new lap record owed some thanks to fast 250 rider Geoff Cesmat, who’d come back out for this race and was fighting Schram for the lead. Front runner Jason “Hammer” Madama was also in the mix, going in three bikes wide with them, but suffered a fall early in Saturday’s race. Madama would later redeem himself with a 2nd place finish in the Sunday Cup race. Normally zippy Tony Baker had slept through the Saturday morning 250 qualifier, and thus unfortunately found himself gridded on the last row for the start. He would have work to do to see his little Ninjette anywhere near the front of this race. And in fact it was Cesmat and Schram, elbow to elbow for the duration, who put on the show for the crowds. They never came apart the entire length of the race, and Schram took the win over Cesmat by a narrow .08 seconds, with Matt Diehl riding a great race to 3rd. Tony Baker rode his heart out to bring home a valiant 4th place finish, trailing the lead group.

In Race of the Rockies young gun Colter Dimick holeshotted his R6 from the second row, but the ensuing swarm of veteran racers gobbled him up in short order. Shane Turpin on the BMS 1198R moved past into the lead on the first lap, with Josh Graham, Dan Turner and Doug Kahl all on GSX-R1000’s following. MRA #1 plate Dan Turner had suffered a rare fall during qualifying, and his crew spent the day scrambling to repair the bike for RoR. Turner did not let them down after all that hard work; after Dimick he passed Graham smoothly to take over 2nd place, and then put his head down to focus on Turpin. Behind him Graham and Kahl were battling when Graham hit a false neutral going into T3 and crashed out. That left Kahl in 3rd to pursue Turner, who was gapping the field as he chased leader Turpin. Meanwhile Josh Galster had caught Dimick and the two R6’s were dueling for 4th position, Galster would eventually win out. Another terrific race was going on further back in the field, between Michael Bradshaw, Erik Peat, Keith Eastin and Shannon Moham. Bradshaw was at HPR for the first time on his big 1098R, but seemed to have figured out the blind entries and elevation changes quickly. The foursome swapped positions and juggled their order corner by corner, with Moham’s R6 fighting to hang onto the three liter bikes on the straights. Championship points leader Turpin kept watch on the field to maintain his gap, bringing home the win for Boulder Motor Sports. Turner rode to a comfortable 2nd, with Kahl taking the final podium spot.

On Sunday Heavyweight Superbike enjoyed an intense battle as Shannon Moham cracked off a new personal best lap time, on his way to stopping the winning streak of Shane Turpin. It was Moham’s second win for the day and his forth on the weekend. Another notable battle went on between Pat Lansu and Carl Sorensen, the pair fighting for the last podium position for the duration. Lansu eventually won out for the spot, and the final order was Moham, Turpin and Lansu.

The MRA’s introduction to racing program, SuperStreet, continues to grow and attract new racers to the club. This weekend the paddock was treated to the largest SuperStreet grid yet, 26 bikes, and spectators watched some of the best racing action all weekend. The program is run on Saturdays and includes classroom, on track instruction, launch drills, and finally a sprint race, all for only $100. SuperStreet racers have the option to purchase an MRA novice license after two weekends in the program. Some riders are registering for instruction at each track prior to pulling a race license; some are stepping up to novice as soon as they’re eligible. The MRA looks forward to continued success with the program in 2012.

Round 7 is scheduled September 17 & 18 at Pikes Peak International Raceway. Race tickets are just $10 at the gate and kids under 12 get in free; stop by any Colorado motorcycle dealership to pick up a 2for1 gate entry. For 2011 the MRA is honoring our Armed Forces, just present military ID and get in free to all MRA races.

The MRA is pleased to offer license reciprocity to racers from other organizations””no charge to license up with the MRA! Visiting racers simply present their current license in the race day office and register for classes the same day. We look forward to seeing you at PPIR.
