Kelsey Wins Four CMRA Races At Eagles Canyon Raceway

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association returned to Eagles Canyon Raceway this past weekend. Gone were the 45-degree temperatures and rain that overshadowed the previous ECR event. In this second of three race weekends hosted at the 2.5 mile, 11-turn track, folks could easily have mistaken the North Texas countryside for the Sahara Desert. The blazing sun pushed temps upwards of 104, while the southern wind did its best to petrify anyone not lucky enough to be indoors with their paws wrapped around a cold one.

Shogun and Brooks Gremmels generously kicked the weekend off with a $1,250.00 cash purse in the 6-hour Mini endurance race. Twenty-two teams registered for the event, sporting such names as RyderHard Racing and Team Robot Devil, proving that at least in terms of creativity, the size of one’s engine doesn’t matter. Four of the 22 teams would succumb to the heat prior to making the grid. Three more teams would fail to make the halfway point due to crashes and/or engine failures, none of which were serious or required a race stoppage. Star-studded RD&G Racing (Aaron Gore, Austin Gore, Dustin Dominguez, Clayton Schutz, Alan Phillips) would take the win, closely followed by impromptu mini endurancers Greenlawn Racing (Rich Wu, Anthony Dean Sr., Hunter Morgan, Conner Blevins) and speedsters the Howlie Boyz (Dean Thimjon, Jason Swan, Jim Swan). Perhaps the oddest sight of the day, however, was the pool party thrown under the Davis Rod and Cycle E-Z UP canopy. Eliminated from the podium by a slowly dying motor on their San Francisco-themed race bike, one team member later claimed the party was ragin’.

The RentMyNinja.com E Superstock race was one of the best of the year. Brandon Altmeyer opened a small gap at the start of the race and looked like he may have the field covered, but Alan Phillips was there in his typical form and took over the lead with a couple laps to go. Ryan Max Johnson, mounted on tired “Old Faithful,” a Ninja EX250 borrowed from RentMyNinja, sat in third watching Phillips and Altmeyer swapping the lead back and forth for the first several laps of the race. While RMJ enjoyed the intensity of the battle up front, it quickly became clear that not only was he on-pace, but the other two had forgotten about him. With two laps to go, RMJ snuck past Phillips and latched onto Altmeyer’s tiger tail. On the final lap, a lapped rider threw a monkey wrench into the group and inadvertently opened a small gap between RMJ and Altmeyer. Determined to close the distance, RMJ drug his knuckles less than normal, trailbraking deeply into Turn 9 and got a great drive out, which placed him directly on top of Altmeyer’s rear wheel as they entered Turn 10. RMJ said screw it and went for a do-or-die pass at the exit, squeezing through a space barely wide enough for a bicycle, much less Old Faithfull. He drifted a little wide, but stayed off the brakes and made the pass stick cleanly. The pass surprised Altmeyer, possibly giving the youngster a heart attack, and left him no option but to drift wide as well. Phillips seized the opportunity and passed for second on the brakes into the final turn. The three would finish 1, 2, and 3 with less than .290 of a second between them. Awesome racing.

In the Expert division, Ty Howard showed up for practice on Friday, stunned the field with his Speed Racer impersonation, and then promptly forgot to race on Sunday. Danny Kelsey said thank you very much, and promptly won all three of his litre bike races (RaceworX A Superstock Expert, A Superbike Expert, Formula 1) on his Honda CBR1000R. Kelsey was no match for youngster Derek Wagnon in the B Superstock race, however, who also won the South Central Race Center C Superstock race. Wagnon ran the fastest race times of the weekend and was the only racer to dip into the 1:48s on a bumpy, greasy track.

Iron Man Darrell (“DJ”) Ricks, a nominee for the CMRA Board of Directors, put on a hell of a show of courage to win the D Superbike race. Seen hobbling around the pits on an ankle that received surgical “repair” the week before, Ricks battled swelling, pain, bike problems, and wickedly fast competitors to take the win. Ricks, Austin Gore, and Shawn Adams would battle back and forth in the SV classes all weekend, with each taking at least one win.

Furious battles aside, 14-year-old Hayden Schultz once again stole the headlines. No longer content to thrash his Novice competition, Schultz took the advice of RaceworX owner Jimmy Cambora, a long time fixture in the suspension world, and moved to Expert, where he started from the back of the grid in five races. According to Schultz’s dad, the move is calculated to prepare Hayden for next season, where he expects to compete for podiums. And compete he will, based on times and coolness under pressure. The author notes that Schultz managed to win his first Expert race in his first weekend as Expert when he wheelied past fast guy Eddie Thornton in Turn 6 of the final lap during the Rookie Expert race.

In the Novice Division, Jose Silva won seven races (OnRoad OffRoad Suspension A Superstock, Lone Star Track Days B Superstock, Moto Liberty C Superstock, A Superstock, B Superstock, Formula 1). Silva’s victories are more impressive due to the fact that he blew a motor in practice on Friday, drove to 250 miles to Austin to obtain a new platform, and then kicked butt on Sunday. Also impressive was Ryan Max Johnson who won all but one race he entered.

The CMRA next travels to MotorSport Ranch, in Cresson, Texas, August 26-28. Races will be conducted in the clockwise direction. Lone Star Track Days will host a CMRA-approved License School and racer practice on Friday. For those of you who have been putting off getting your race license till sometime else, get off the pot and make it happen in two weeks!! As Provisional Novice Joe Caruso proved at Eagles Canyon, you never know how fast you are until you go racing. In Caruso’s case, he managed to win the Formula 40 Heavyweight race on his BMW S1000RR, as well as steal several podiums from a certain Kawasaki. Gate fees are $15 for Friday and Saturday (good for all weekend), but only $10 for Sunday. Ride your bike, horse, or scooter in and pay only $5!! Please remember, pets are never allowed at CMRA events.
