Motorcycle Xcitement Racing Team endures 6 hours of Summit Point adventure Summit Point, West Virginia — The Motorcycle Xcitement Racing Team had an amazing day at the WERA National Endurance 6 Hours of Summit Point Raceway on July 30. The team was racing in honor of our dear friend Al Wilcox, who passed away in February at 92 years and 31 days old. Al was Motorcycle Xcitement’s official starter, “Motorcycle Racing’s National Treasure” and “Starter to the Stars for 52 years!” Al Wilcox raced professionally for 15 years with the national # 49 plate. He raced for the Harley-Davidson factory for 4 years from 1948-1951. Al flagged WERA races from 1973 to 2010. The hospitality tent was set up behind the #49 pit with beautiful girls serving cold watermelon and water, information about Motorcycle Xcitement Track Days and Road Racing School, complimentary issues of Roadracing World Magazine, Motorcycle Times, and Summit Point Karts. Congratulations to the winner of the free track day, Ellis Solomon, of Fort Washington, MD. The WERA 6 hour National started at 11:10 am with 15 teams on the grid. Lead rider for the #49 Motorcycle Xcitement Al Wilcox Tribute bike was young gun Cassidy Heiser. From the start, Cassidy was flying on the Suzuki SV 650 with Al Wilcox airbrushed on the bike, racing against friends on 14 other teams. At about the 30-minute mark, crossing the Al Wilcox Start/ Finish Line, the #49 Suzuki’s motor went up in a cloud of oil smoke! Racer Tim Bemisderfer rode around Cassidy to let him know to get off the track — his bike was on fire! Someone handed Cassidy a fire bottle and he extinguished the fire. The bike and rider arrived 10 minutes later courtesy of the MARRC Safety Crew pickup truck. Never give up! Wheels and other parts were swapped to the backup bike and after filing a new tech form and going through tech inspection, the other #49 Motorcycle Xcitement bike restarted the race with 0 laps completed. Gary Yancoskie took the controls. Hey, we are back in the race! After 55 minutes, we refueled and put Dylan Scott on the bike. Fourth rider in our line-up was Dustin Watson. After some time on the bike, transmission problems occurred. If you stayed on the gas, no problem. Stay on the gas, boys. Our guys rode a great race finishing in fourth place in the lightweight class. The whole team worked well together and we have some good memories. On Sunday for the WERA National Sprint Races, Cassidy Heiser, racing the Battley Cycles and Motorcycle Xcitement Yamaha R6, started on the front row of the C Super Stock race. Cassidy missed a shift going down the front straight and was running in 5th spot. Going into turn 8, Cassidy’s front wheel touched the back wheel of Zach Herrin. Cassidy went down and slid hard into the Airfence. The bike’s foot peg stabbed him in the back of the left leg and he went to the local hospital. From there they decided to fly Cassidy to the York, Pa. hospital for surgery. Cassidy’s doctor told him to relax, he will race again. That’s pretty cool! More, from a press release issued by Adam Wentling: Thrills and Spills for the #49 Al Wilcox Tribute Bike in the WERA National Endurance at Summit Point Bike Owner and Team Captain Adam “Chief Wildman” Wentling really had his hands full on Saturday. Despite all the adversity and obstacles, the team fulfilled all sponsorship obligations and finished with a smile. In the Saturday morning practice, the bike barely made it out of the pits, losing traction and lowsiding in Turn One. The rider limped his bike back down Orchard Road to the pit; however, unfortunate timing left him stuck behind a water truck, meaning it was a muddy rider and bike that returned to hot pit. The crew busily set to work repairing the damage, but was unable to complete repairs before the practice session ended. With undimmed spirits, the crew sent rider Cassidy Heiser out on the bike for the start of the Endurance, believing the worst to be behind them. Less than forty minutes later, having put down roughly two dozen laps at an impressive pace, Cassidy recognized something was not right with the bike as he passed the third brake marker heading into Turn 1 moments before the rear wheel locked. Going into Turn 1, BEI Racing/Dunlop Development Team rider Tim Bemisderfer signaled to Cassidy to get off the racing line and spectators wildly gesticulated that the bike was in flames. Cassidy, cool under fire, grabbed a extinguisher near him and quickly dealt with the problem. MARRC Safety Crew workers retrieved the bike, and Cassidy and #49 rode back to the pits in the crash truck. The team, refusing to surrender, immediately decided to forfeit the laps earned and restart on the backup bike, owned by Chief Wildman’s wife Sarah Davisson. After a short delay, during which the crew prepped the backup bike, rider Gary Yancoskie hopped on and launched himself down the front straight. Dustin Watson relieved Gary, but transmission issues brought him back to the pit after only 3 laps. Cassidy Heiser gave it a go, but he too had troubles with the transmission. Rider Dylan Scott gamely jumped on, and was able to tame the transmission to complete a full one-hour stint; Gary, bolstered by Dylan’s confidence, took his turn for over an hour, and Dylan finished up the race. Chief Wildman Adam extends his deepest gratitude to his riders and pit crew, whose tenacity kept them going despite the heat and adversity to finish what was an exceedingly challenging race; crew includes Jut Smith, Chuck Banks II and III, and Mike Hebb. More, from a press release issued by Revolution Racedays Kawasaki: USA’s Day takes first win in spectacular STK 600 race at Silverstone WSBK. Orlando’s Joshua Day became the first American to win a race in the European Superstock championship, taking his Revolution Signs/ Racedays Kawasaki ZX6R to a tremendous victory at Silverstone after a race long battle. Day had been set for pole position in qualifying with a 0.5 second advantage at the final split but another riders crash prompted yellow flags and ended the fast lap, relegating Day to 12th on the grid. At the start of the race the long run into turn one saw Day in 11th position, with a seemingly impossible gap to catch the leaders. Undeterred, Day pulled off a series of brave passing moves and within only three laps had passed the full field ahead of him to lead the race. The following six laps showed the pedigree of the riders in the European Superstock 600 championship, as Yamaha’s Metcher, Russo and Lanusse tried to catch Day’s Kawasaki in a spectacular show of riding talent. Metcher used the slipstream cleverly and took the lead twice in the final laps only to be passed back by a confident Day in the braking zone. Exiting the final chicane Metcher took the inside line in a bid to outdrive the American to the final corner. But Day gave it his all and found the grip to pull around the outside and hold off the Australian, claiming his first race win of the season.
