DAYTONA BEACH, FL (July 21, 2011) – Sunoco Race Fuels has long been known as one of the most active supporters of motor racing across a wide spectrum of disciplines, and that support extends to the AMA Pro Road Racing Championship. The Sunoco “Go the Distance” Award is offered in both AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike and AMA Pro Daytona SportBike, rewarding those riders in each class who complete the most laps during the season with a $5,000 check. This year’s overall championship hunt in National Guard SuperBike is closer than ever, with Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young leading the way, his six wins giving him a slim, 11-point margin over reigning champ Josh Hayes (Monster Energy Graves Yamaha). That neck-and-neck competition plays out with even narrower margins in the Sunoco “Go the Distance” contest, however, as Young and Hayes are currently tied at exactly 556.06 total miles each. Daytona SportBike contender Cory West (Vesrah Suzuki), meanwhile, enjoys a small but solid “Go the Distance” lead as the series heads for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend, having accumulated 710.81 miles to Y.E.S./Pat Clark/Graves Yamaha rider Tommy Aquino’s 694.51. While West is fifth in the overall championship, he’s turned in three podium finishes this season and is clearly determined to return for more. Two rounds remain for the series’ SuperBike and Daytona SportBike riders, making it now-or-never time for riders hoping to collect a $5,000 “Go the Distance” check at the season-ending awards banquet. The AMA Pro Road Racing Championship is in action this weekend at Monterey, California’s Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, where AMA Pro athletes will join international MotoGP riders for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix.
