Schmidt Surges To The Lead

In Round 4 Of The OMMRA Formula Ultra Championship at Portland International Raceway. Entering the race weekend, with consistency and new-found speed, Sam Verderico of Wenatchee, WA led the Formula Ultra championship by 15 points. Needing to recover from misfortune in earlier rounds, Alan Schmidt, 7-time #1 plate holder of Kamloops, British Columbia, on a resurrected superbike, had his work cut out for him. In the dry on Saturday, Schmidt put his stamp on the championship by lighting up the tarmac, flirting with the lap record and dominating the field. Verderico would have to settle for third as Kevin Pinkstaff grabbed the second step on the podium in dramatic fashion on the final lap of Saturday’s race.

For the first time this season, OMRRA’s fastest would contend with driving rain in their quest for championship points in Sunday’s races. Marcel Irnie of Kelowna, British Columbia, took a surprise win in Sunday’s Formula Ultra aboard a liter bike for the first time in competition. With wet weather wins under his belt this year with WMRRA, wet weather specialist, Mark DeGross took the second spot while Schmidt took home important points in third. Even with wins in 600 Superbike, Open Supersport and a podium finish in Saturday’s Formula Ultra race, Verderico would suffer a flat tire in Sunday’s race and limp home in 8th, handing the championship lead to Schmidt by a mere two points.

In the Clubman Championship, despite a controversial, high speed Turn 1 incident involving Chris Ancien of Portland, OR and Matt Presting of Vancouver, WA in the 750 Supersport race, Ancien continues to dominate the points. Ancien took home a hard fought win in a 600 Supersport dog fight with Ancien and Presting swapping the lead a half dozen times. Presting would have to settle for 2nd and go on to collect 1st and 3rd place trophies in 750 Supersport and 600 Superbike.

Taking the 3rd position in 600 Supersport, celebrating his 16th birthday is teenage sensation, Devon McDonough of Portland, OR. With Presting and Ancien locked in an epic battle, McDonough quietly shadowed them and recorded the fastest lap of the race. In the Vintage Championship, another teenager, Cody Wood or Portland, OR is showing his prowess by distancing himself atop the championship standings. Racing a bike three times older than he is, Wood picked up two hotly contested wins in the 500 Vintage class and two 2nd place finishes in the 250 Vintage category for the weekend. Keeping Cody honest this weekend were Andrew Pignataro and Daric Cheshire. Cheshire, a first year novice and local tuner, took two 3rd place finishes in the dry while Pignataro bested Wood in the wet. Pignataro’s weekend efforts yielded two 2nd place finishes and a 3rd in addition to the win, improving his championship standings. The other wet weather win over Wood came from Ryan Shanahan in his first race of the season.

The Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association (OMRRA) developed the two-race per weekend Formula Ultra Championship, the ‘your best two classes’ Clubman Championship and the two-race per day, Olympic scored Vintage Championship, promoting safe, competitive road racing in all categories. OMRRA, incorporated in 1972 as a non-profit, volunteer run organization, has members ranging in age from 12 to over 70, racing motorcycles of many brands, sizes and ages. OMRRA operates at Portland International Raceway, a city park and world class track. For more information, visit www.omrra.com and join us at www.omrra.com
