Building a City in Days 233 Million International Viewers MONTEREY, Calif., July 14, 2011 “” In just 10 days, teams of carpenters, electricians, maintenance, groundskeepers and so many more are building a micro city to accommodate MotoGP fans equal to the total population of Burbank, Calif.; Flint, Mich.; or South Bend, Indiana for the Red Bull United States Grand Prix. Miles of cable, tons of lumber and large platforms for the MotoGP VIP Village and enormous tent structures are being built nearly around the clock in preparation. Teams arrive in Monterey direct from Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday and have precious moments before tackling the 2.238-mile undulating track. It’s show business at its best…and fastest. “The infrastructure has to be in place for this major event that attracts fans from across the country, international visitors and hundreds of journalists who cover each MotoGP race,” says Gill Campbell, CEO/general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “We have just days to build a city to host our international guests and teams.” The Red Bull United States Grand Prix is the largest event held in Monterey. “It eclipses attendance for the many golf championships and other events held on the Peninsula,” Campbell adds. “For four days, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is the epicenter of the world’s motorcycle racing community.” Campbell also points out that MotoGP is the most watched international television event originating from Monterey, attracting a worldwide audience of 233 million viewers each race from 207 countries, which is double the viewership of this year’s Super Bowl.
