The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association traveled to Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, in Hallett, Oklahoma this past race weekend, July 8 10. Located just outside of Tulsa, the track boasts 10 turns spread out over 1.8 miles. Always challenging, the track and Mother Nature conspired to create one of the most intense racing experiences imaginable. A blazing sun produced ambient temperatures in excess of 108 degrees, while the track pavement registered a balmy 132 (+). The heat turned the track surface, already dimpled and cracked from years of abuse by screaming banshees of the two and four-wheeled variety, into a greasy quagmire before noon. The slick conditions quickly reduced otherwise hearty racers into glorified speed skaters. Simply put, it was almost too hot to handle.

Shogun Motorsports / Brooks Gremmels, long-time sponsor of the CMRA, started the weekend off right by offering a generous $1250 cash purse for the 3-Hour Mini endurance teams man (or woman) enough to brave the heat. Twenty Mini teams took to the grid in search of fame and fortune. Three hours later, the Davis Rod and Cycle (Jesse Davis, Ryan Andrews, Stephen Guynes, Derek Thomas, Derek Wagnon) Ninja 250 crossed the line for the win, one lap ahead of RG&D Racing (Aaron Gore, Austin Gore, Dustin Dominguez, Clayton Schutz, Alan Phillips). The Davis Rod and Cycle team turned consistent 1:33s on a 25 horse power bike, a daunting feat in any weather. The Howlie Boyz (Dean Thimjon, Jason Swan, Jim Swan) would finish close on the heels of second, only four laps down on first.

Shortly after 2 PM, coincidentally almost immediately after the Minis peddled off the track, the first snarling crack of a big-bore KTM sent the Minis and their pit crews scurrying from pit row like so many Keebler Elves. As the Big Bike endurance teams shouldered their way onto the course, it became perfectly clear that these folks were here to run. And run they did as Ty Howard, Team Quadwealth/SCRC’s (Ty Howard, Bryan West, Jeremy Louder, Derek Wagnon, Ryan Andrews) lead off rider, dropped a stunning 1:19:952 from a standing start to open the 4 hour event. Like a rabbit on crack, Howard would pass his first lapped rider shortly before beginning his fourth lap. Quadwealth/SCRC continued to run faster times than their competitors for the first half of the race as Derek Wagnon took over given the depth of talent, Quadwealth/SCRC seemed poised for a win. Unfortunately, the team’s fuel pump had other plans and fizzled out with less than an hour to go.

Lurking in the shadows, the always-fast Village Idiots (John Orchard, Chris Headley, Brandon Cleland, Blake Cochran) pounced. Running consecutive hour (+) stints in the excruciating heat, the Village Idiots had run a tight, wickedly consistent race pace to stay in the lead. While other teams changed riders, the Village Idiots kept the hammer down. After the race, the true nightmare of the race conditions came to light as Brandon Cleland showed off his hard-earned war wounds hands badly blistered by the heat. The Village Idiots finished the race in first, four laps ahead of Lone Star Track Days (Mark Niemi, Andy Galindo, Gabe McClendon), and six laps ahead of Quadwealth/SCRC.

Determined not to let the war of attrition continue, Director of Competition, Walter Walker, announced Sunday that the sprint races would be shortened from 8 to 6 laps. The few skeptics, perhaps the only ones in the paddock not exhausted from the endurance races, quickly recognized the wisdom in his decree as Sunday’s temps quickly surpassed those of the previous day, prompting one racer to remark “Holy [censored], it’s not even August!”

The sprints, shortened though they were, proved to separate the men from the boys. Derek Wagnon, Danny Kelsey, and Brandon Cleland would emerge as the days big winners. Wagnon set the weekend best time with a blazing lap of 1:15:946, just six-tenths off the lap record, during the relatively cool morning hours of the B Superstock event. Wagnon would also win the South Central Race Center C Superstock race.

Brandon Cleland won the B Superbike and Island Racing Services C Superbike races, outpacing hard chargers such as Alan Phillips, Blake Cochran, and James Camacho Jr. Cleland’s performance is even more impressive given the condition of his hands. Speaking of riding injured, the Ragin’ Cajun and fast guy Darrell (DJ) Ricks managed to enter and compete in the Formula 2 and D Superstock events, notwithstanding the fact that he broke an ankle the day before. Ricks expects to return to the grid in full force in August.

Danny Kelsey continued to perform well, winning the Raceworx A Superstock, Formula 1, and A Superbike events. Kelsey has been on a tear this season, winning the majority of his races.

Fourteen-year-old Hayden Schultz continued his dominance of the Novice division, winning the Lone Star Track Days B Superstock, Moto Liberty C Superstock, Ridesmart Motorcycle School C-Superbike, and Road and Track Suspension Formula 1 races at his home track. Several of his competitors hoped to redeem themselves after the previous arse-whooping Schultz handed down at Hallett and/or Cresson, but it just wasn’t gonna happen, a fact Schultz made clear in practice by laying down lap times in the 1:19s, a blistering pace on a greasy track.

Novices earning a worthy mention for the weekend include Eric Williams, who won the Road and Track Suspension Formula 4, beating out Brandon Altmeyer to do so. Williams partially attributes the win to not experiencing catastrophic brake failure, but the 17-year-old also ran well on his new bike, a Suzuki SV650. Jose Silva continued to perform well, winning two races (OnRoad OffRoad Suspension A Superstock and A Superbike), as did Ryan Max Johnson (Road and Track Suspension Formula 2 and Ridesmart Motorcycle School Lightweight Twins.

The CMRA now heads to Eagles Canyon Raceway, in Decatur, Texas, on August 6 -7. The CMRA will host a full schedule of sprint races, as well as a 6-Hour Mini endurance race. RETURNING AIRMAN AND DUCATI OKLAHOMA MAKE THE PODIUM!

Air Force Lt. Van Blaylock looked impressive this weekend in the CMRA Heavyweight Twins race at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, piloting the Ducati 1198s to a solid 3rd place finish.

After a Championship 2008 campaign and a very impressive 2009 season, Blaylock has done two tours in the Middle East preventing his participation in racing.

Blaylock said, “It felt terrific to go out and shake the rust off, and even better to get a podium in the process”.
