A successful day’s golf for Leon Haslam. BMW Motorrad Motorsport works rider Leon Haslam today teed off at the Pro-Am Experience at the BMW International Open in Munich. Munich/Eichenried, 22nd June 2011. A contrasting programme for Leon Haslam (GBR): the BMW Motorrad Motorsport works rider swapped his bike for his golf clubs at Golfclub München Eichenried (GER) today. Leon was taking part in the Pro-Am Experience, held ahead of the BMW International Open 2011 the only professional men’s tournament on German soil. This provides amateur golfers with the opportunity to experience a round alongside stars of the international golf scene. Leon’s professional flight partner was his compatriot Paul Casey, the current number twelve in the world and winner of multiple tournaments on both the European Tour and the US PGA TOUR. The Pro-Am Experience was played as a team competition in “beat par” format. Leon is, himself, an enthusiastic golfer with a handicap of 12. However, as a BMW Motorrad Motorsport works rider in the FIM Superbike World Championship he has little time to indulge his hobby, meaning he enjoyed the day all the more. “It was great to play with Paul Casey, it was a fantastic day,” said Leon. “The course was pretty hard, especially the rough. It was much deeper than I am normally used to, and the greens were also very fast. It was only my sixth game of golf this year. So from my side it was definitely a challenge out there, but a big experience to play with a professional.” Casey gave the BMW Motorrad Motorsport works rider a few tips, and they were able to enter a few pars and birdies on their scorecard. “That is always nice. As a rider I obviously always want to win and compete, but these professionals we were playing with are definitely in a different league to me,” Leon added. “You just have to watch and be amazed by what they are doing. I just enjoyed the day and watched the professionals show how to do it properly.” Casey also enjoyed the round with the motorcyclist. “I am a big motorsports fan. I think that Leon is very brave and crazy for what he does,” said Casey, who was also impressed that Leon showed no sign of the injuries he suffered at the race weekend in Misano (ITA) out on the golf course: “How can you play golf, when you injured your wrist only two weeks ago? I am impressed that he can still swing a club.” “And I think he plays very good golf. It was good fun playing with him today. His ears were probably bleeding with all the questions I was asking him about the racing. And he invited me to come to Silverstone and sit on his bike. We will see I don’t think I’ll be doing that,” added a grinning Casey.
