Motorland Aragon produces fantastic racing from the European Junior Cup Once again, the young riders of the European Junior Cup provided some of the best race action of the weekend at the Aragon round of the World Superbike championship. Monza’s winner, Australian Matt Davies, had made the best of the windy conditions on Saturday to set pole position aboard his Kawasaki Ninja 250R, ahead of Spain’s Ruben Fenoll and German Tom Busch. From the start Davies pushed hard in an attempt to break away and for a while it seemed that he might escape as Fenoll and Busch battled for second position, but the two chasers cleverly took advantage of Aragon’s huge straight to slipstream back up to the leader. Behind this group Miguel Aranda, the youngest rider in the series, gave it his all at his home round to set the fastest laps of the race and join the leading three whilst the USA’s Brandon Kyee had pulled away from the battling trio of Daniel Mettam, Sylvano De Aguiar and Daniel Teixeira. Normally the best of friends, the New Zealander and two South Africans showed true racing spirit and gave the spectators a great show as they swapped positions and paint in a tough race long battle. As the last lap neared, the four riders at the front were glued together with Busch, Davies and Aranda all having lead the race at some point. Approaching the hairpin for the final time Busch pulled out of the slipstream and looked to have passed both Fenoll and Davies for the lead, but the young Australian held him off on the brakes. Miguel Aranda tried to take advantage of this battle and pass Fenoll for third but was cleverly blocked by his fellow countryman through the following right hander and after 40 kilometers of racing the run to the line saw Davies take the win from Busch by 0.13 seconds, with Aranda losing out by an even smaller margin of 0.07 sec to Fenoll in the battle for the final podium place. With only 0.4 sec covering the top four finishers it was another fantastic race for the young European Junior Cup riders. Matt Davies has now closed the gap to 7 points from championship leader Tom Busch, but with several of the other riders looking increasingly strong and half the season to go the championship is still wide open!
