Team ADR FLY Racing riding through wave of challenges in AMA Pro National Guard Superbikes The past week has seen two rounds of the AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Championships at Miller Motorsports park, UT and Road America, WI respectively, with Team ADR Fly Racing continuing on their developing path with positive results. The team rolled into Miller for the combined AMA/ WSBK event on 28-30th May with high hopes of some strong results for both David Anthony and rookie AMA Superbike Rider Jordan Burgess, who both finished strong at testing at the circuit some weeks before the event. Coming off an disastrous Infineon campaign in Round 2, the boys were keen for some strong results here as both riders enjoy the Miller circuit. After Qualifying *** for Aussie Dave and 15th for Jordy Burgess, the wet weather cleared somewhat for the race and the ADR camp looked to be in a good position for some strong results until an unfortunate lowside from Burgess through turn two ended his run. It was then up to Dave Anthony on the #25 ADR Suzuki GSXR1000, who raced hard to finish in 9th position. Four days on and 1500 miles later, round Four of the AMA Road race Championships was held at Road America, Wisconsin. Burgess, in his first year Stateside had never actually seen the R.A circuit until friday practice, where there was one session then straight to qualifying. Anthony and Burgess completed qualifying with no mishaps and got up to pace quickly. The two races which were held over saturday and sunday saw Aussie Dave finish with 12-12 finishes and Jordy Burgess with 13-15. Overall the boys were contempt with the results, having a season of misfortune to date so to see four checkered flags was refreshing. David Anthony: “The last 3 weeks have been busy and demanding for our team. We have been busy in the workshop building engines and bikes before we left for Miller in preparation for the long haul East. All of the ADR Fly Racing team have put in the hard yards to make this work. It hasn’t been easy so far and to get a 9th place finish was a good reward for our hard work and commitment to see us run up front with the big budget teams. It was a shame to see Jordy fall out at Miller but he is making good progress and it is no easy task what he is doing here. Road America was a tough one for me, mentally and physically. We couldnt seem to find the consistent pace throughout race time for both Jordy and myself and this shows in the results. I struggled with a pre existing back injury throughout the last 2 rounds which has not helped anything either. However the show must go on and I am happy that we could get results on the board for this round for the team and our sponsors. We will be conducting a few test days throughout the next week or so to continue our development for the up and coming rounds. Jordy Burgess: “The season so far has been a real roller coaster for me. I was really heartbroken after my crash at Miller because we had put in so much work and i felt really good on the bike in the race until the front let go on me suddenly. Road America was always going to be tough, since I had never been there before but I loved the circuit, the fast flowing nature of it really gave me a buzz! We seemed to hit a plateau in the races when the temperature rose and struggled for grip to be competitive but I am happy overall and relieved to give the team a positive result. I came into this round just wanting to finish a whole round and we did it with my best result to date. The next week of testing will be beneficial to us, mainly to get myself comfortable on the up and coming tracks we will be competing at and find some good pace for the races. More, from a press release issued by Dainese USA: AGV and Dainese Riders on the Podium Again at AMA Pro Round 4 at Road America Costa Mesa, CA June 7th, 2011 Round 4 of the AMA Pro Racing Superbike series took place last weekend at the beautiful Road America track in Elkhart, Wisconsin. The great weather and big crowds helped make it a successful weekend for all, including for our AGV/Dainese riders. In the 2011 AMA Pro National Guard American SuperBike series our Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider, Blake Young, had a tremendous weekend at his home track. Coming off from a win at Miller, Blake was motivated to do well in front of his many fans and took a convincing win on Saturday after a race-long battle with Josh Hayes and teammate Tommy Hayden, making it his fourth win of the season. On Sunday Blake jumped right back into it, fighting to the checkered flag for a 3rd place finish. B-Young is now 10 pts behind the series leader and 13 pts ahead of 3rd. M4 Suzuki’s Martin Cardenascontinues to show progress in his rookie year in the big bike class and confirms the speed he brought from his 2010 Daytona SportBike championship winning season. Martin went 4-4 on the weekend and strentgthen his 4th place in the standing. Jordan Suzuki’s Ben Bostromrode hard during weekend on the #23 bike and left Road America with two positive Top 10 finishes. AGV Dainese’s Steve Rapp had mechanical issues on Saturday but came back strong on Sunday, taking his BMW S1000RR to a 6th place finish. After missing the first two races of the season, “Rapper” has climbed back to 9th in the series. Geoff May had a difficult weekend on his Wisconsin-based Amsoil EBR Racing Buell 1125R after a 130mph high-side during Friday’s qualifying that left him a bit sore. “Thanks to my leathers, man that was brutal!” said Geoff after the crash. The #99 went 10-17 at Road America. The intense battles saw James, David and Tomas bring home 3 podium finishes. Tomas suffered a mechanical on Saturday while Rispoli and Gaviria suffered crashes during Sunday’s race. Friday Practice and qualifying went extremely well. We unloaded the bike and hardly made any changes all day. I was 2nd in the provisional qualifying for Supersport and felt that I had a lot left under my belt. Saturday morning final qualifying and practice consisted of a 3rd fastest in the Supersport, and 2nd fastest on the XR1200. I was very happy to be on the front row and knew all I needed was a good start and I could hang with the lead pack of riders. Supersport Race 1: I didn’t get the best start, I found myself in 6th place going into turn one. On the first lap, another rider crashed in front of me going into the chicane. I was worried that his bike would slide back onto the track so I slowed down a bunch and lost a bunch of ground on the riders in front of me. Eventually, I was able to catch back up to the 2nd place rider James Rispoli. We battled back and forth for a few laps until I got around him and broke the draft. With only a few laps remaining, I was sitting in second place with the leader in sight. I rode as hard as I possibly could and made up over two seconds on the leader but ran out of laps finishing 2nd place and my first podium in the Supersport class! I ended up running the quickest lap of the race and was convinced that with a few more laps, I would have been in contention for a win. But I settled for second place, and was more than ready for race two on Sunday. XR1200 qualifying got underway and I knew I had to link up to a couple riders in order to get a good draft and a fast time. All the riders were very close in time and I ended up being 7th fastest. Although I was on the second row, I wasn’t worried about the race because I knew it was going to be a close race no matter where I started. Sunday came around and I felt confident in both bikes to the point where I just put in some good track time in the warm ups. We made a gearing change with the 600 and I was right back down to my qualifying time so I was confident I could make a good run in the race. I spent most of the morning relaxing and preparing myself because the XR1200 and Supersport races were back to back. XR1200 Race: I got a good jump but found myself being swallowed up by the other riders into turn 1. I came around the first lap in 9th place right behind my brother Kyle. I was able to draft the riders really well and I felt confident on the brakes so I began picking off the riders one by one. Before I knew it I was at the lead of the pack. It was a very intense race because the top 7 riders were all fighting for that top spot and we were 4 wide in some spots just trying to get ahead of one another. I was in 4th place heading into the last lap and was able to get around a rider for 3rd. I held on strong, and tried to get a draft off of Eslick coming up the hill but couldn’t quite pull it off and finished a very respectable 3rd. Right after that race had ended, I didn’t even have time to stay for the podium ceremonies. I had to run back to the pits and hop on the 600 for Supersport Race 2. Supersport Race 2: After a very intense and exhausting XR1200 race, I spent my warm up laps re-adjusting myself to my 600 because the bikes are so different. Once again, I didn’t get the start I was looking for and was running around 6th place. On the first lap a couple riders got together and wrecked coming into the last section. It was hard to make out how to avoid the wreck so I slowed way down and got passed by a couple riders. Coming up the hill and into turn one I was able to regain 6th place and focus on the riders ahead of me. A good battle erupted between Puerta, Myers, and Rispoli and myself that seemed inevitable. I was able to get the lead but struggled to hold it as the other competitors and I were passing back and forth. Eventually, I was able to put a little gap on myself and the other riders with four laps remaining. I had never been in that position before and starting making a couple mistakes due to the intensity of my situation. I had to physically tell myself that it was just a practice, I was the only one out there, and that I could just ride around without feeling the pressure. I came across the checkered flag with a four second gap over second place. I cant even begin to explain the feeling of relief and satisfaction that I had on that cool down lap. One of those moments I will never forget. I have to give a big thanks to my entire team for all their support in such an amazing race weekend ! More, from a press release issued by Jake Holden Racing: Ashburn, VA – Jake Holden Racing is definitely ready to put the last two race weekends behind them. After Round 2 of AMA Pro Daytona SportBike at Infineon Raceway, #59 Jake Holden underwent surgery on his left pinky after crashing out of the second race. The surgery was successful and Holden was cleared to race two weeks later on Memorial Day weekend at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. During the two week break between the Infineon and Miller rounds, Jake Holden Racing added a second rider to their roster. Travis Ohge has been competing in the SuperSport class on the #40 Yamaha YZF-R6. Ohge is only campaigning for points in the West Coast Championship. “Travis is such a talented rider and we thought it would be a good idea to bring him onboard for the remainder of the season,” Team Owner Breeann Poland stated. ” The idea of helping Travis came about at Infineon after he earned strong 5th and 3rd place finishes.” Fast Forward to Round 3 at Miller Motorsports Park. The weather was nothing short of inconsistent throughout the whole weekend. Recovering from surgery, Holden decided to take the cautious route in first practice Saturday morning and ended up qualifying in the 9th position. His teammate Ohge fought set-up issues and landed in the 13th spot in the SuperSport class starting lineup. With bad weather on the horizon, the JHR crew worked late into the night making sure both bikes were set-up for the right conditions for Sunday’s races. All into the night and the following day the rain poured down at Miller. Ohge, a comfortable rain rider, was 2nd quickest during the rain filled final qualifying session but he started 13th based on the previous day’s dry condition qualifying times. Right at the start of the SuperSport race, Travis made his move toward the front of the pack. Travis was constantly battling for a podium position and took the checkered flag with a 3rd place finish. “I was so excited when I saw the forecast for the weekend. I am really confident in the rain and I wanted to give me my team and my family something to be proud of, now I can go home with two podiums in two weekends,” stated Ohge. On the other side, JHR teammate Holden didn’t feel so comfortable in the rain and in the final qualifying session was finding it hard to get a good feel for the bike and had some issues with his left pinky. Jake has never had a strong result in the rain and was hoping for a change. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, Jake didn’t feel the comfort level during the race to run up front and his hand was still giving him issues so he settled in and rode out the wet conditions finishing 20th. “I really wanted to try and do a repeat from Race 1 at Infineon but I was still having trouble with my finger and that got the best of me,” said a very disappointed Holden. Moving on to Round 4 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, the team was ready for a repeat with Travis and redemption for Jake. Travis had never toured the famed Road America track but was eager to use as much track time as he could to learn it. Throughout the weekend Travis was able to improve on his times and finished both of his SuperSport races in the top ten with an 8th in Saturday’s race and a 7th on Sunday. ” I had never been to Road America before but I am really happy to finish both races in the top ten. We just left and I am already itching to get back!” said Ohge. Unfortunately the bad luck streak continued to follow Holden. The stars weren’t aligned for Jake and he went 0-2 over the weekend. In Race 1 Jake was battling for 9th with another rider and midway through the race low-sided after losing the front and crashing out. In Race 2 Jake ran wide and was stuck in 20th place when the red flag was waved after another rider had crashed. Just after the restart, Jake was making his way into turn 3 when another rider came from behind clipping Jakes bike and sending him soaring through the air. The race was red-flagged yet again and he was transported to the medical center then to urgent care to be treated for swelling of his right leg and a spiral fracture on his thumb, the same hand he had just had surgery on a few weeks before. ” This wasn’t the greatest weekend for me. I am glad I have the next two weeks to regroup and try to be ready for Round 5 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL on Father’s Day weekend June 17th-19th. I need to focus on my hand and make sure I am 100%. My crew has worked so hard this season and I want to come home with a top podium spot,” stated Holden. In Daytona SportBike, Celtic Racing/Fast By Ferracci Ducati rider PJ Jacobsen battled the entire Daytona Sport Bike race at Miller, claiming second position on the podium, just 0.161″ from victory on his K-Tech equipped Ducati 848 Evo. Cameron Beaubier, riding his privateer Yamaha YZF R6 with K-Tech suspension, finished third showing impressive speed all weekend. The close racing at the front of the Daytona SportBike class would continue with Jacobsen riding to a strong third place at Road America. More podium finishes were also earned by K-Tech equipped racers in the SuperSport class at both events. David Gaviria and Tomas Puerta aboard the LTD Racing Yamaha YZF R6 machines finished second and fourth at Miller, in really difficult conditions with poor grip and low temperatures. At Road America, Gaviria proved that he had the skill and speed to win, taking victory in race one. Puerta finished a solid third in race two – a great weekend for LTD Racing riders overall, with Sam and Huntley Nash showing great progress as well. Hearty congratulations to veteran racer Steve Rapp, who rode his Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson XR1200 to victory using K-Tech Suspension front and rear, at Miller Motorsports Park. K-Tech equipped Michael Barnes rode hard in the XR1200 race to finish fourth, with Michael Beck on his tail in fifth position. Vance & Hines riders Barnes, Rapp, and Beck qualified third through fifth at Miller for the race. At Road America the trio improved their qualifying to cover second through fourth position on the grid, with Barnes finishing fourth, Rapp close behind in fifth, and Beck one bike back in seventh at the end of the race.
