Kelsey, Ricks Win CMRA Races At Hallett

Kelsey, Ricks Win CMRA Races At Hallett

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its fourth event of the 2011 season at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma this past weekend. Riders from all over the country signed up to have a go at the technical, 1.8 mile, 11 turn course. The weekend produced some of the best racing yet, as the points chase remains close in many of the big-ticket Superbike and Superstock events.

Torrential rain during Friday’s practice restricted all but the most diehard racers to their rigs until late afternoon. With forecasters calling for a 30% chance of rain Saturday and Sunday, many racers predicted another round of racing in the wet. Fortunately, Saturday dawned clear and cool, leaving many teams scrambling to swap tires prior to gridding up for Saturday’s races.

Race 1 provided a glimpse of the battles to come as Eric Williams grabbed the lead from Brandon Altmeyer out of turn 1 on his Honda RS85 in the Road & Track Suspension Formula 4/OnRoad OffRoad Suspension Formula 6. Williams and Altmeyer proceeded to put on a show as they swapped positions while fighting for the lead, time and again. Ryan Max Johnson would go on to win the race, however, when Williams’ free-floating brake rotor did just that–floated off the mounting rivets. The ensuing lowside collected both Williams and Altmeyer, who were okay. Ryan Max Johnson went on to win the race, his first of five for the weekend.

In the Mini endurance, 20 teams gridded up to fight for a chance to call themselves the fastest little bikes at the track. As one rider would say, riding a mini is the most fun you can have on two wheels. At the end of the two-hour marathon, the Davis Rod and Cycle team (Jesse Davis, Ryan Andrews, Steve Guynes, Derek Thomas) would take home the victory. Ryan Andrews rode all but about 12 minutes of the endurance race, while Jesse Davis rode the last 12 minutes. RG&D Racing (Aaron Gore, Austin Gore, Dustin Dominguez, Clayton Schutz, Alan Phillips) and Scarey Racing (Greg Anderson, Sam Carey, Ricky Parker, Chris Carey, Matt Hall) rounded out the overall podium.

The 5-hour Big Bike endurance drew some of the fastest names in club racing. When the flag dropped, 29 teams roared into turn 1 with all the finesse of a bar brawl. When the dust cleared, Whoopie Cycles / Dunlop (Hayden Schultz, Dustin Dominguez, Danny Eslick) would take the overall win. Eslick, who calls Hallett his home track, would set the fastest lap of the race within the first hour. KTM mounted Quadwealth/SCRC (Ty Howard, Bryan West, Jeremy Louder, Derek Wagnon, Ryan Andrews) and the Village Idiots (John Orchard, Chris Headley, Brandon Cleland, Blake Cochran) on their Yamaha R6 rounded out the top three overall. Less than 24 seconds separated the three teams.

The Sunday sprint races started with a bang, literally in the case of Expert Bill Guthrie. Guthrie blew a motor on his BMW during practice and borrowed an Aprilia SXV450 to salvage points in his classes. With Ty Howard out of the country and Guthrie on a motard, Danny Kelsey earned another three wins in RaceworX A Superstock, A Superbike, and Formula 1. Darrell (“DJ”) Ricks similarly had a perfect weekend, wining the Formula 2, D Superstock, D Superbike, and Lightweight Twins races. Brandon Cleland, recently returned from the AMA races at Infineon Raceway in California, won the South Central Race Center C Superstock and B Superbike races and placed second behind Conner Blevins in the Island Racing Services C Superbike race.

In the Novice division, 14-year-old Hayden Schultz put on an extremely impressive performance at his home track, winning the Lone Star Track Days B Superstock race and placing second in the Moto Liberty C Superstock, Ridesmart Motorcycle School C Superbike, and Road & Track Suspension – Formula 1 races behind Jose Silva. It is worth noting that although Schultz placed second in three races, he ran a quicker lap time than the winner, Jose Silva, in two of them. According to Schultz’s dad, “Hayden just turned 14 last week. He’s really found some speed on the big bikes. If he continues this path, we’ll bump up (to Expert) soon. He won’t get faster as a Novice.” Silva would otherwise dominate the weekend, winning six races (Moto Liberty C Superstock, Ridesmart Motorcycle School C Superbike, Road & Track Suspension – Formula 1, OnRoad OffRoad Suspension A Superstock, A Superbike, and B Superbike).

The CMRA now heads to MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas, on June 10 – 12, where the CMRA will host Mini sprint races and a 6-hour Big Bike endurance on Saturday, and a complete schedule of Big Bike sprint races on Sunday. The CMRA License School and Friday practice will be provided by Lone Star Track Days www.lstd.com.
